SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Four Presbyterian players scored in double-figures but the Blue Hose (13-17, Big South: 5-10) lost to the USC Upstate Spartans (10-19, Big South: 5-11), 74-72, on a buzzer beater.
Kory Mincy, who knocked down a game-tying three with 10 seconds on the clock, led all scorers with 17 points.
Samage Teel scored 14 points.
Trevon Reddish-Rhone recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Marquis Barnett scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Jonah Pierce scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF – The Spartans scored the game's first basket. Then, PC behind the scoring of Barnett, and Teel scored eight straight points. USC Upstate scored ten of the next 12 points taking a 12-10 lead with 13:41 on the clock. At the 11:19 mark, the game was tied at 16, the Spartans scored six straight points regaining the first half lead for good. After a layup from Barnett with 5:43 on the clock, Presbyterian cut USC Upstate's lead to two, 22-20. The Spartans would go on a 9-0 run over the next two and a half minutes taking a 31-20 lead. Mincy scored seven straight points for the Blue Hose, getting PC within seven, 34-27, with 1:33 left in the half. USC Upstate scored five of the final eight points of the half taking a 39-30 lead into the locker room.
SECOND HALF – Behind a three-point play from Reddish-Rhone and two free throws from
Kaleb Scott, the Blue Hose scored the first five points of the half cutting USC Upstate's lead to four, 39-25. The Spartans scored five straight points pushing their lead back up to nine points. The Spartans maintained a lead of 5-9 points for the majority of the first 10 minutes of the half. After a triple from Mincy with 9:46 on the clock, Presbyterian cut USC Upstate's lead to 58-55. The Spartans answered with a three of their own. Behind a three-point play from Reddish-Rhone and a three from Mincy, the Blue Hose tied the score at 61 with eight minutes left in the game. USC Upstate went back in front by three and PC tied the score at 64 after a three-point play from
Kobe Stewart. USC Upstate scored five straight points taking a 69-64 at the 3:53 mark. Presbyterian scored eight of the next 11 points tying the score at 72 after another three from Mincy. With one second on the clock, USC Upstate's Trae Broadnax scored the game-winning basket on a driving layup.
NOTES
- Mincy scored a season-high 17 points while connecting on a season-high four three-point field goals.
- Teel's 14 points marked his 23rd double-digit scoring game of the season.
- Barnett with his 11 points posted his 24th double-figure scoring game of the season and the 43rd of his career.
- Reddish-Rhone (11 points, 10 rebounds) recorded his first double-double of the season and the second of his career.
