FARMVILLE, Va. – It was a doubleheader that could be categorized by a tale of two games for the Presbyterian College softball team, shutting down Longwood in the first half of a Saturday doubleheader for a 6-1 win and one-all series tie only for the home side to come roaring back in the finale for an 8-0 mercy rule result.
Sophomore
Peyton Duncan commanded the Blue Hose defense to atone for the team's Game 1 loss less than 24 hours earlier, limiting Longwood to only one hit through the first six innings and picking up one of the most impressive wins of her young career.
Presby's bats ensured there was no doubt as they knotted up the series, witnessing a solo home run from first baseman
Jillian Hewes and a three-RBI performance by
Kendall Owens for good measure.
Taking two out of three against Winthrop two weeks ago, Presbyterian was given the same sequence by the Lancers over the weekend which gives the Scotsmen a 3-3 mark in Big South Conference affairs.
Just four more series remain within the division, although head coach
David Williams' group now gets the luxury of an eight-game home streak starting in four days. They'll match up with South Carolina State this Wednesday for a 3:00 PM twinbill.
GAME ONE – PRESBYTERIAN (12-22, 3-2) def. LONGWOOD (10-20, 3-2) – 6-1
- The Blue Hose gathered eight hits among a lineup that stayed consistent throughout the affair, although Duncan was the star of the show on a day where she faced 26 batters and inched ever-so-close to a shutout.
- Freshman
Kasey Wolfe was ushered into the circle for the game's final out, putting the exclamation on Duncan's work where she kept the Lancers silent for six and-and-a-half innings and personal win number three on the year.
- Shortstop
Emma Yanes wasted no time in putting PC ahead for good in the top of the 1
st, bringing
Kaitlyn Tucker around the diamond on a base hit, the first of three runs on the afternoon from Presby's second baseman.
- That immediately registered as the sixth straight game where the Georgia State transfer has reached base at least once, a stretch that ended in the second clash.
- Owens and Hewes chipped away at Longwood starter Er'ron Burton, securing their next four runs via extra-base swings (the aforementioned HR by the latter and consecutive doubles from the former).
- Going down as the ninth time in a 10-game span where Owens batted in at least one run, the junior amassed her second-ever showing with two doubles in a sole appearance (joining a similar heater versus Tennessee Tech back in February).
-
Maddi Wood delivered Presbyterian's sixth and final score on a sacrifice fly that wrangled in pinch runner
Morgan Farthing, a cushion more than large enough to seal the squad's 12
th W of the campaign.
- Duncan is now one personal victory away from hitting double digits nearing the halfway point of her Blue Hose tenure, while Wolfe added an individual trinket by collecting her first PC save.
GAME TWO – LONGWOOD (11-20, 4-2) def. PRESBYTERIAN (12-23, 3-3) – 8-0 (5 INNINGS)
- For the second straight league set involving the blue and garnet, Game 3 loomed with the series hanging in the balance. The Lancers compiled 12 hits on their way to a one-sided finish, granting Maggie Chapin her 11
th win of the year.
- Lead-off leftfielder
Kelby Goodrum and Tucker touched base in the quick defeat, the latter improving on what's already a school-record by acquiring her 95
th career walk.
