PC Builds Sizable Lead in Game Two, Splits with S.C. State

CLINTON, S.C. – Although a sudden 180-degree flip in Game 1 of a Wednesday doubleheader against South Carolina State amounted to an improbable defeat, the Presbyterian College softball team rebounded in commanding fashion (6-2) after taking the aforementioned 2-1 loss.

Presby's underclassmen put forth several stout showings versus their Palmetto rivals, most noteworthy of which came from reigning Adidas / Game One PC Student-Athlete of the Week Peyton Duncan.

The sophomore pitcher soared to a career-high 10 strikeouts in the opener despite a two-run homer in the 7th spoiling the mood, beating out her previous best of eight against IUPUI last spring.

Additionally, freshman Kasey Wolfe continually torched SCSU's bullpen in the two-parter, going four-of-six at the plate and ending the evening with a personal-high four RBI and a three-run homer in the bottom of the 5th.

PC's first three in the order (Wolfe, Kelby Goodrum, and Kaitlyn Tucker) were responsible for all seven of the squad's runs scored in the DH, improving the Blue Hose to a 12-2 all-time mark when going head-to-head with the Bulldogs.

Now that the hump day excursion from Big South play is done, head coach David Williams' crew continues their eight-game home stretch by hosting Charleston Southern this weekend for another three-game set.

The first of that trio with the Buccaneers is scheduled for 6:00 PM on Friday night.

GAME ONE – SOUTH CAROLINA STATE (5-19, 2-7) def. PRESBYTERIAN (12-24, 3-3) – 2-1

- Duncan's utter domination of South Carolina State seemed like a sure-fire W was on the way for an offense that had only needed a double from Tucker in the very first frame to sit on the doorstep of a victory.

- Each of the first seven outs came via a Duncan K, eventually hitting the double-digit plateau for the first time in her blossoming career. The visitors stranded five runners prior to the last stanza, although the tide turned in a blink thanks to an unexpected longball.

- That homer (swung by pinch-hitter Destiny Calloway) was the sole factor in S.C. State's stunning win, while reliever Aaliyah Williams tallied the save by recording the final two outs in the 7th.

GAME TWO – PRESBYTERIAN (13-24, 3-3) def. SOUTH CAROLINA STATE (5-20, 2-7) – 6-2

- In a testament to PC's bounce-back ability, coach Williams' gang left no doubt in the rematch by repeating their 1st-inning strike but adding five more insurance runs for good measure.

- Wolfe and Emma Yanes produced consecutive RBI in the bottom of the 3rd to give the Scotsmen a 4-0 advantage, their largest lead of the day that was boosted once Wolfe stepped up to the plate again for her two-run blast in the 5th.

- The Blue Hose racked up five extra-base connections, three of which came from Wolfe who has already captured Big South Freshman of the Week honors twice this season.

- While a hypothetical shutout didn't come to fruition, Presbyterian was still able to achieve their 10th triumph of the year when playing on their home turf and the 56th in the career of Jenna Greene who went the distance.

- PC's super-senior retired six, meaning that Greene and Duncan combined to strike out 16, walking just one and granting the Blue Hose their fourth win over a fellow South Carolina school since the start of March.

UP NEXT

- Taking one of three in Charleston last April, Presby will stay on their domain to battle the Bucs this time, who hold a 16-17 record themselves. Both clubs are identical in terms of their conference resume (three wins, three losses), crafting an intriguing concoction for April 5 and 6.

- CSU was only able to pick up the W once in three tries against USC Upstate, however they'd recuperate the following weekend by shutting out Gardner-Webb twice while winning the series two-games-to-one.

- After the 6:00 start in two days, PC will enact a doubleheader with Charleston Southern on Saturday that begins at 1:00.
