Softball Obtains Third Walk-Off of 2024 in 4-3 Thriller over Buccaneers

CLINTON, S.C. – An error-assisted score by the Presbyterian College softball team in the bottom of the 7th lifted the Blue Hose to a come-from-behind 4-3 triumph against Charleston Southern on Friday evening, secured by Kendall Owens as Mallory Fletcher put the ball in play.

Improving to 4-3 in Big South competition while putting themselves in the driver's seat to start the three-game series versus CSU, Presby collected their third win via walk-off of the semester and second inside of league action.

Head coach David Williams' club acquired the W in similar nature during their last league set at home (an 8th-inning 3-2 result against Winthrop), as well as a 1-0 decision opposite Wofford back in March.

That means that each of PC's last-second wins have occurred against fellow South Carolina schools, a trend that continued after an infield miscue from the Bucs cost the visitors a game in which they controlled for a large portion.

Due to the drama surrounding Friday's victory, the remainder of the series seems strapped for even greater tension as a doubleheader is in the cards tomorrow afternoon.

NOTABLES

- One of the most pressure-filled at-bat's in recent memory saw Fletcher step up with two outs already recorded and Owens waiting on 2nd base. Shortstop Emma Yanes sent Owens to that spot on a well-placed sacrifice bunt, leading to either a game-winner or 8th inning depending on what happened next.

- The answer was the aforementioned Buccaneer error, successfully completing a 3-1 comeback by Williams' crew where they only had two innings to make up that distance.

- Freshman Logan Grice put PC on the board with an RBI-double early on, one of Presby's three extra-base connections and eight hits altogether.

- Lead-off third baseman Kelby Goodrum mirrored that same swing down the leftfield line in the bottom of the 6th, bringing home Morgan Farthing and pinch-runner Lanie Ruscoe that evened the odds near the finishing stretch.

- Jenna Greene and Kasey Wolfe served as a formidable pitching duo to combat CSU's acclaimed tandem of Annah Junge and Nealy Lamb, the former striking out six before turning it over to PC's star freshman who threw the final 1.2 innings without surrendering a single hit.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Grice's rightfield hammer brought Gracie DeCuir to home plate from 2nd after CSU struck first, the fifth RBI of the spring by the newbie who started for the 21st time.

- Charleston Southern broke a two-inning lull by bringing in a pair of their own in the 5th, only for Goodrum to answer and tug the score back down to a tie once again.

- Immediately after Wolfe stepped into the circle midway through the 6th stanza, Yanes came up huge with a double play that swayed momentum back in the Scotsmen's favor.

- Presbyterian's defense limited the Buccaneers to a 1-2-3 sequence with the game hanging in the balance, avoiding extra innings with an unintentional aid on CSU's part.

- Owens cracked three hits in four at-bats prior to the game-clinching sprint home, one of four Blue Hose to reach at least 30 on the campaign to this point.

- While PC ended up stranding eight in the back-and-forth duel, their clutch genes generated from prior close wins ending up saving the day and allowing them a chance to win their second Big South series should they scoop at least one W when the sun rises.

UP NEXT

- Game 1 of Saturday's twinbill (and Game 2 of the overall series) will take place at approximately 1:00 PM, followed by the finale soon thereafter.

- Presbyterian leapt to their 11th win at home this season and 28th over the past 14 months when Clinton is the backdrop, looking to stay in the multi-team race near the summit of the conference standings.
