CLINTON, S.C. – In one of the most thrilling finishes in recent memory for the Presbyterian College softball team, freshman
Kasey Wolfe upended the university closest to her hometown of Spartanburg with a walk-off base hit in the bottom of the 8
th against Wofford on Tuesday night, defeating a newfound rival by a 1-0 cushion.
Denoting the fourth time in less than a month that the Blue Hose have found themselves in an extra-innings situation (and the second time that has occurred with zero's on the scoreboard), Wolfe sent
Kelby Goodrum to home plate for the game-clincher and her team-best 11
th RBI.
Not to be outdone amidst all the drama, fifth-year pitcher
Jenna Greene was a major factor in halting Wofford's four-game winning streak by sending nine batters back to the dugout with a K. She closed the evening with the 59
th complete game of her record-shattering career, only letting four hits get through and leaving the Terriers with 11 runners stranded.
The most stylish of PC's seven victories on the campaign, head coach
David Williams' squad will head to the Sunshine State this weekend for a five-game tournament versus three more nonconference opponents. They'll begin that sequence in Jacksonville with a 9:00 AM doubleheader against Marist on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Further emphasizing the theme of defense that has permeated through a majority of Presby's outings in 2024, Tuesday's slugfest was headlined by a tug-of-war in the circle between PC's super-senior and Wofford's Abby Greenwood.
- Those combatants combined for 14 strikeouts as neither side could break through a scoreless tie, leaving at least two players on the base pads in four different half-innings.
- Greene kept the Terriers at bay for personal win # 52 and shutout # 21 (both of which are already school records at the Division I level), retiring seven Wofford starters on over 140 tosses.
- When the dust settled, however, all the postgame attention fell to Wolfe's direction after smacking arguably PC's largest hit of the season to this point.
- Goodrum was able to reach first in the 8
th thanks to an infield mishap from the Terriers (part of four errors by the visitors throughout the contest), sprinting to scoring position in the aftermath of a
Kaitlyn Tucker sacrifice bunt.
- Catcher
Maddi Wood drove Goodrum even closer to the game-winner by launching a flyball that Wofford lost in its glove, leaving room for Wolfe to hit the go-ahead single and earn a top-tier W in the inaugural meeting between the two schools separated by less than an hour.
UP NEXT
- Marist, Tarleton State, and Jacksonville will clash with the Blue Hose following the midweek triumph against the Terriers, the first two of those schools getting ready to face off with PC for the very first time.
- Presby's next three foes have conjured up 29 victories between them, including a current 11-game winning streak from the Red Foxes who will go toe-to-toe with PC on Friday for a neutral two-parter.
