JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Presbyterian College softball team was held without much on the scoreboard in a neutral doubleheader against northern opponent Marist down in the state of Florida, dropping two to the Red Foxes on Friday afternoon (who have now won 11 straight), 2-0 and 14-1.
Known for their stout defense – holding every one of their foes below four runs during the aforementioned two-week streak – Marist conceded a sole sacrifice fly from the Blue Hose in the final inning of Game 2, moving PC to 7-14 on the calendar.
Looking to regroup for another DH in less than 24 hours, Presbyterian will enact a second first-time-ever series in as many days when they'll take on Tarleton State. Game 1 is scheduled for 9:00 AM in Jacksonville, with the next bout following soon after.
GAME ONE – MARIST (12-4) def. PRESBYTERIAN (7-13) – 2-0
- Marist pitcher Kiley Myers continually made things difficult for the Blue Hose in the team's first of five affairs in the Sunshine State, striking out eight and keeping PC from bringing any runs aboard.
- Presby stranded two runners in the 1
st on a high swing to centerfield, unable to stay afloat in the final frame on a game-ending K with pinch-runner
Lanie Ruscoe on third base.
- The Red Foxes jumped ahead in the top of the 2
nd with a solo homer, adding a second run in the last stanza after an errant throw that also led to a stolen base.
- Freshman
Kasey Wolfe was given a tough draw as the pitcher who was saddled with the loss, walking only one and keeping a red-hot Marist club mostly in check over seven full frames.
GAME TWO – MARIST (13-4) def. PRESBYTERIAN (7-14) – 14-1 (5 INNINGS)
- The metaphorical lid blew off early in the second clash, however, witnessing a seven-score opening inning by the Red Foxes who had just pushed their winning streak up to double digits.
- Marist authored two grand slams in the 1
st and 4
th periods to put the game out of reach, although junior
Kendall Owens was able to put
Kaitlyn Tucker on home plate with a sac fly once the bases were juiced in the 5
th.
- Speaking of Tucker, the senior North Carolinian offered a small silver lining for Presbyterian on Friday by becoming the school's new all-time leader in career walks. She gained two in the doubleheader, bringing the infielder 87 over her stint in the blue and garnet.
NEXT UP
- Tarleton State will take their turn to battle PC in a similar 9:00/11:30 DH, holding an 11-11 record (although before playing USC Upstate and Jacksonville later on Friday, meaning that mark will change by the time they lock horns with the Blue Hose).
- Head coach
David Williams' club has never crossed paths with the Texans in their history, the sixth time in 2024 that has been the case for PC.
