CLINTON, S.C. – It seemed that the precipitation persisted through nearly every minute of the Presbyterian College lacrosse team's Saturday setback versus undefeated UMass Lowell, ending proceedings on the bad side of a 15-4 loss in the squad's return to Bailey Memorial Stadium.
A day away from being a full month in between home appearances, the Blue Hose found themselves on the retreating end of numerous UML attack sequences, unable to slow a 9-2 halftime edge that was hoisted considerably after a seven-goal spurt by the visitors in the 2
nd quarter.
Just the beginning of a three-match homestand that will span the next five days, PC comes right back to Bailey on Monday for a rare noon contest against Akron. Opening draw control is slated for an ESPN+ broadcast, as is the ensuing bout with Rider two days after that.
NOTABLES
- Although falling shy of breaking UMass Lowell's eight-match winning streak (the longest in Division I lacrosse at the moment), Presbyterian found some solace during the downpour in the form of another record-breaker from do-it-all graduate
Abby Edmisten.
- The Georgia native recorded her 136
th career goal at the 8:26 stamp of the 2
nd period, officially passing a 10-year-old mark set by Catherine Ellis (2011-14) for the most in school history.
- Already Presby's highest point-getter to ever come through the program in the university's 16-year affiliation at the Division I level, Edmisten added a second goal of the afternoon with 40 ticks remaining to give her eight successful strikes in four affairs.
- Juniors
Willow Hammond and
Mickey Paredes made up the rest of PC's goal count in the soggy altercation, outscored 8-2 through the final 30 minutes of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edmisten's history-making play put an end to a 5-0 start from the River Hawks, followed by another opportune swing by Paredes that came with only 18 seconds left until the first half horn.
- However, UMass Lowell was the beneficiary of a stroke of luck moments later, putting one in the back of the net with one second 'til the period's end that brough the margin up to seven.
- The northerners held on from that point, producing 30 shots on the day while winning 16 of 22 draw controls.
- Sophomore transfer
Kayleigh Aitken was given the starting role at the goalkeepers' position, stopping 10 attempts that came in her direction while never leaving the field.
UP NEXT
- Head coach
Eric Clakeley's unit continues their home-heavy week with two more hosting designations in the near future. They'll welcome Akron to Clinton on March 11 for a lunchtime date, 12 months after winning a thriller over the Zips in Ohio.
- Up by a deuce at the half and holding on for the clutch victory when the two foes last met in March of 2023, Hammond and Edmisten logged timely goals in the 4
th quarter to ensure a tight non-conference W.
- The blue and garnet will aim to repeat that feat and move to 3-1 all-time against Akron, facing an opponent that improved to 3-5 on the year with a 15-9 triumph against Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
