BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The offense was hard to come by for the Presbyterian College softball team in the penultimate doubleheader of the 2024 regular season, emerging from a seven-day absence on Saturday but dropping a pair to Gardner-Webb in Big South action (7-1 and 4-1 respectively).
PC mustered seven total hits as the Runnin' Bulldogs clinched the conference set, still awaiting a finale between the two in less than 24 hours (Sunday at 1:00 PM).
While Presbyterian's bullpen was up to its usual sturdiness – as starters
Jenna Greene and
Peyton Duncan threw a combined 9.2 innings – the Blue Hose were unable to summon the correct number of runs against a league opponent who has collected the most W's of anyone in the division at this late stage of the season.
GAME ONE – GARDNER-WEBB (31-19, 7-9) def. PRESBYTERIAN (14-32, 4-9) – 7-1
- Freshman
Kasey Wolfe (who also relieved in both outings on Saturday) secured PC its lone run of the opener by booming a sacrifice fly in the top of the 4
th that enabled lead-off third baseman
Kelby Goodrum to come home.
- That trimmed a 2-0 deficit in half after Gardner-Webb landed an early dinger, however the distance was once again stretched thanks to the home side acquiring a five-spot in the 5
th stanza.
- Goodrum and senior second baseman
Kaitlyn Tucker posted back-to-back swings that led to their earlier score, while shortstop
Emma Yanes also reached base on a walk to begin the 5
th.
- Greene added five more strikeouts to her career total of over 700, going up against 27 batters before Wolfe filled in for the final six and prevented the six-run margin from growing any further.
GAME TWO – GARDNER-WEBB (32-19, 8-9) def. PRESBYTERIAN (14-33, 4-10) – 4-1
- Andrea Lyon and Elle Doolittle did their part from a defensive perspective as G-W's starting twirlers, holding the Blue Hose to a pair of runs put together over 14 innings. That low-scoring theme carried over into Game 2, where PC quickly endured a 4-0 hole.
- Tucker attempted to start a 6
th-inning rally from head coach
David Williams' crew, doubling to send in
Morgan Farthing who also notched an extra-base hit moments prior.
- However, the Scotsmen's next two swings landed in view of the rightfielder, subduing the traffic then and there.
- Yanes accounted for Presby's final connection of the day on a 7
th-inning single, while Duncan mirrored Greene by tossing to 26 batters.
UP NEXT
- Now making the rush to qualify for the four-team Big South Tournament that much more frenzied, the Blue Hose will aim to regroup and salvage Game 3 when the sun rises again on Sunday.
- The last three conference finales have turned against PC's favor, looking to buck that trend with four games remaining on the regular season map.
