Terriers Command 4th Quarter, PC Falls in Season Finale

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following an eerily-similar script to their last outing earlier in the week, the Presbyterian College lacrosse team faltered down the stretch in the 2024 season finale against South Carolina rival Wofford, taking a 21-12 loss on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Hose have been eliminated from contention into the Big South Tournament, concluding their spring schedule at 2-14 and 1-7 inside of league play.

Perhaps too comfortable with an eight-goal advantage early in the 3rd, Wofford paid the price as PC rallied off eight of the match's next 10 scores to turn what was a nifty lead by the home side into a 14-12 affair entering the last stanza.

However, just as the Blue Hose were held to zero in the 4th during a close defeat versus Winthrop three days ago, the same fate happened again in Spartanburg as the Terriers ended the bout on a 7-0 run.

Presby battled closely for the majority of the contest against one of the most potent offensive groups in the division, edged out in total shots by a 29-26 clip with 17 on-target looks.

NOTABLES

- Saturday's outcome was the final time that Abby Edmisten, Kylie Sullivan, Lily Clawson, and Juliana San Lucas will suit up for Presbyterian, embarking on new post-grad careers after receiving their diplomas from PC next week.

- In Edmisten's case, she will leave head coach Eric Clakeley's system as the program's all-time leader in total goals (151) and points (189). She found the back of the net thrice against the Terriers, the 23rd time in an amazing career with three scores or better.

- Former all-leaguer Willow Hammond posted a four-point afternoon (two goals next to a couple of helpers), while classmate Mickey Paredes contributed three points and rookie Kaylie Rittmueller dished up two scores in the 3rd.

- Altogether, seven different players registered at least one goal as the squad came one away from matching its highest-scoring single-game output of the campaign, with Brooke Chandler, Emma Claire Mills, and Melissa Mucollari rounding out PC's progression.

- As has been the case for a sizable chunk of the spring, Naomi Lauderbaugh and Kayleigh Aitken shared their time in the keeper's box which amounted to five saves between that duo.

- The 33 combined goals is officially the highest-scoring contest to feature PC in a Big South matchup this year, the fourth-highest number in a conference match since the school fielded a lacrosse team and the most since a 2021 encounter with Campbell in Clinton.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Wofford's work in the 1st and 4th periods proved to be enough for the victory, securing seven goals in the opening frame on their way to a 12-6 halftime cushion.

- PC shined in the aforementioned 8-2 rally, building five unanswered scores after returning from the locker room and suddenly causing plenty of nerves on the other sideline.

- Six separate players got by Terrier goalie Ella Smithers as the furious comeback continued, with Hammond applying even more pressure by launching back-to-back late-quarter swings that came just 48 seconds apart.

- Five PC scores came with a free-position opportunity – two of which occurred in the 3rd – although a minus-12 differential in draws allowed Wofford to gather themselves in the last chapter and reassume control of the game.

- After a cooling-off period during which All-Big South selections will be announced, the Blue Hose will now make the transition to the offseason. Clakeley has now completed five seasons as Presbyterian's man-in-charge.
