PC Hits from Deep Distance Twice to Outlast Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sophomore Emilia Lieber and senior Gwen Keiser sent the Presbyterian College women's soccer team to a 2-0 mark over the Southern Conference on Thursday night in a visit to Furman, aiding the Blue Hose to their second one-score victory of the year in a 2-1 bout.

Just one week after dealing the same fate to Wofford in Spartanburg, Presby defeated their second SoCon adversary in a row and earned their second-ever W against the Paladins in the process.

In the infant stages of the campaign, Presby has now submitted all five of their goals when playing the visitor's role. Both successful strikes on Thursday came from a lengthy distance, as Keiser's first-ever collegiate goal resulted in the victory.

"I'm so proud of how our players responded after a tough loss on Sunday", commented head coach Matt Smith. "They showed the exact amount of focus and determination for 90 minutes that it takes to beat a quality team, and they had the right mentality all the way through."

The Blue Hose continue their six-match sequence of SC-only meetings next week, conducting Senior Night against Southern Wesleyan on August 29. First touch back at Martin Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

FINAL SCORE: Presbyterian, 2 – Furman, 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Responsible for the game-winner versus Wofford seven days prior, Lieber accounted for PC's earliest goal of the young season at the 11:05 stamp. Classmate Lyla Chadd dished out the assist on the play, a snipe from roughly 30 yards out.

- Coach Smith's unit carried the 1-0 advantage into the locker room, although the home side quickly evened the odds just nine minutes after the break to bring things back to a stalemate.

- That's where Keiser entered the fray with a free kick opportunity as the clock read 64:58. She lofted the ball past Paladin keeper Reese DeJong, the first connection of the senior's career that effectively won the match.

- Presbyterian kept Furman off the board for the final 46 minutes as senior goalie Kelly Hall engineered her sixth personal win. It stands as PC's first triumph over Furman since 2017, which coincidentally was also in Greenville and another affair where the Scotsmen scored a pair.

UP NEXT

- Southern Wesleyan comes to Clinton in seven nights where Keiser, Hall, Madison Hindman, Sarah Dieffenderfer, and Sophia Thomson will all be honored in a pre-match ceremony.

- Operating out of Conference Carolinas at the Division II level, SWU competed against another Big South foe in their season-opener (a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Winthrop).

- ESPN+ will be broadcasting the contest as the Blue Hose search for their first home win in the Smith era.
