BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team (2-9) suffered a road defeat to Virginia Tech on Wednesday evening (Dec. 10), falling to the Hokies 92-36 at Cassell Coliseum.
The Hokies held the Blue Hose to just 24.5 percent shooting from the field. Virginia Tech had an advantage on the glass as well, outrebounding PC 49-28.
Aminata Tal led Presbyterian on the night offensively, scoring 12 points for the game. Her 12 points against the Hokies is the seventh time she has scored in double figures on the year and the 14th overall in her career.
Ore Ogunwolere drained her third three pointer of the season for the Blue Hose. Shelby Fiddler logged a season-high in rebounds with four on the evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Both teams struggled offensively out of the gates to start the night. The Hokies scored the game's first eight points before Aminata Tal got PC on the board for the first time with six minutes left in the opening period. Linger scored her first points of the evening to pull Presbyterian within six, but Virginia Tech put its pedal on the gas the rest of the period. The Hokies finished the quarter strong to go up 22-8 after one.
Second Quarter
The Hokies continued where they left off, going up 20 after the first minute of the second quarter. Four straight points from Tal helped pace the Blue Hose offensively in the first half. Velez scored her first points of the game with 6:44 left, but Presbyterian was held scoreless the rest of the half. The Hokies closed the half on a 13-0 run that spanned nearly seven minutes, taking a 46-14 lead going into the break.
Third Quarter
Amani Williams started off the second half making a layup to get Presbyterian on the board. Later in the quarter, Ore Ogunwolere made her first three of the game. Two free throws from Tal and the first point of the game for Yolanda Floyd rounded out the scoring for PC in the third, as the Hokies continued to control the game. Through 30 minutes, Virginia Tech took a commanding 75-22 lead going into the final period.
Fourth Quarter
Velez drained her first three of the game to get the Blue Hose going in the fourth quarter. Morgan Boyd followed a couple of minutes later with her first points of the evening. In the final period, Tal continued to pace PC on the offensive end of the floor, scoring four points in the closing minutes of the game. Allie Sykes got into the scoring column in the final minute, scoring five quick points off a layup and then her first three of the game. Ultimately, the Hokies prevailed 92-36.
