Women’s Hoops Central: Presbyterian vs. Eastern Kentucky

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Blue Hose women's basketball returns home for the first time since Nov. 17 to take on Eastern Kentucky on Friday evening (Dec. 19) at the Templeton Center at 6:00 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Blue Hose suffered a 92-36 road defeat to Virginia Tech last Wednesday evening (Dec. 10). Aminata Tal led Presbyterian on the night offensively, scoring 12 points for the game. Her 12 points are the seventh time she has scored in double figures on the year and the 14th overall in her career. 

 

Ore Ogunwolere drained her third three-pointer of the season for the Blue Hose. Shelby Fiddler logged a season-high in rebounds on the evening with four.


 

BLUE HOSE BY THE NUMBERS
Senior Aminata Tal powers the Blue Hose on the offensive end, leading PC in scoring with 11.1 points per game. Her 11.1 points per game rank 12th in the Big South. She also leads the team in field goal percentage, shooting 41.4 percent from the field (10th in Big South). PC's other double-digit scorer per game on the year is senior Ja'Cia Cunningham. In 10 games off the bench, Cunningham averages 10.8 points per game, ranking 15th in the conference. 


Ore Ogunwolere has also shined this season for PC, leading the team in both assists and steals. She sits inside of the top 15 of the league in both statistical categories. She powers the team in average minutes per game as well, playing in 25.9 minutes per game. 


Allie Sykes has been Presbyterian's most prolific shooter on the season, leading the team from beyond the arc and from the free throw line. On the year, she has made 18 of her 46 threes while also shooting 92.3 percent from the charity stripe. 


Morgan Boyd is the only player to start all 11 games for the Blue Hose. She leads the team in rebounding, averaging 4.9 rebounds per game. She also paces the team in minutes played this season and blocked shots, playing a total of 272 minutes while blocking five shots. Aretha Linger is second on the team on the glass, averaging 4.4 rebounds per game. 



CLEANING UP THE OFFENSIVE GLASS
As a team, the Blue Hose rank as one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the Big South. Through 11 games, Presbyterian ranks second in the league in offensive rebounds per game, averaging 14.6. Linger and Samantha Mullock lead the team in offensive rebounds on the season with 15 each. The Blue Hose also rank fourth in the conference in offensive rebounding percentage. 

 


SCOUTING THE COLONELS
Eastern Kentucky comes into Friday night with a three-game losing streak and a 7-4 overall record. The Colonels dropped their most recent matchup on Wednesday night to No. 16 Louisville on the road 76-51. Liz Freihofer powers Eastern Kentucky offensively, averaging 14.4 points per game to rank sixth in the Atlantic Sun. Joseana Vaz also averages double-digit points a night, scoring 12.8 points per game to go along with 7.5 rebounds per game. Her 7.5 rebounds per game rank fifth in the A-SUN. 

As a team, the Colonels score the second-most points per game in their conference, averaging 73.7 points per game. Greg Todd is currently in his fifth season as the head coach of Eastern Kentucky. The Colonels have played in the WNIT each of the last two seasons.

 


PRESBYTERIAN – EASTERN KENTUCKY ALL-TIME SERIES
This will be the second-ever meeting between Eastern Kentucky and Presbyterian. The lone previous matchup occurred on Nov. 30, 2012 with the Colonels winning 61-43 in Richmond, Ky.

 


BLUE HOSE ROSTER
Joining the Blue Hose this season are nine newcomers (four transfers and five freshmen). The transfers for Coach Sardin are Ore Ogunwolere, Ja'Cia Cunningham, Krystal Haddock, and Laetitia Kamdoum.

Freshmen Aretha Linger, Yolanda Floyd, Allie Sykes, Samantha Mullock, and Amani Williams also join the Blue Hose. This is the most freshmen the Blue Hose have had on the roster since the 2022-23 season (also five).

 
The Blue Hose also return four from last year's roster. Seniors Shelby Fiddler and Aminata Tal lead the returners for PC. Sophomores Morgan Boyd and Daniella Velez also are back for the Blue Hose this season.
 

 

BIG SOUTH SCHEDULE
Conference play begins December 31 for the Blue Hose, with PC set to take on each of its eight Big South opponents twice in a balanced home-and-away schedule.


At Templeton, PC will face Radford on Dec. 31, High Point on Jan. 7, UNC Asheville on Jan. 17, Charleston Southern on Jan. 24, USC Upstate on Feb. 4, Gardner-Webb on Feb. 14, Winthrop on Feb. 18, and Longwood on Feb. 28.


On the road, the Blue Hose will take on Longwood on Jan. 3, USC Upstate on Jan. 14, Gardner-Webb on Jan. 21, Winthrop on Jan. 28, High Point on Jan. 31, Charleston Southern on Feb. 7, UNC Asheville on Feb. 21, and Radford on Feb. 25.
