CLINTON, S.C. – Anchored by a
Peyton Duncan gem and some late-game heroics from
Blair Darby, the Presbyterian College softball team collected their fourth consecutive win on Saturday evening by a 3-2 tally over Maine.
In stark contrast to their victories over the Black Bears and ETSU the prior day – a situation where PC held the lead for 12 of the combined 14 innings – the Blue Hose needed to fight from behind in the middle of dense fog and ultimately won the contest in the bottom of the 6
th.
Duncan struck out eight opponents altogether (five in the first three innings) to finish two off her personal-best. All she needed was Darby's two-run single in crunch time to land her second complete-game win of the past 24 hours.
Originally scheduled to play a pair on Saturday until rain interrupted that idea, Presbyterian will look to complete the invitational tomorrow versus ETSU at approximately 1:30 PM. The Scotsmen took round one against the Buccaneers on Friday by a 4-2 cushion.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Everything was moving swimmingly from Duncan's perspective after the first three stanzas, allowing just two base-runners out of her first 11 batters until Gabby Papushka cranked a solo home run to start off the 4
th.
- Head coach
David Williams' unit badly needed an equalizer, and they found what they were searching for in the 6
th against Black Bear pitcher Madison Simmerman who similarly tossed a complete game for the visitors.
- Preseason All-Big South selection
Kasey Wolfe started the mini-rally with a base hit, prompting PC to bring in freshman pinch-runner
Sabrina Rose. She then advanced to second after
Mallory Fletcher smacked a single of her own.
- That's when Darby entered the box for the first time on the night, brought into the fold as a pinch-hitter. Already with two home runs in 2025, the junior submitted another clutch play by bringing home both Rose and Fletcher to hand her squad the advantage in one blink.
- Newbie
Olivia Goforth stepped onto the third-base pad after Darby's lead-shifter, sprinting home herself after a Maine error to make it 3-1 Blue Hose.
- The Black Bears made the final moments a bit more dramatic by logging a two-out RBI that yanked the deficit down to one, although Duncan forced a fly ball to rightfield to slam the door and deliver PC's fourth straight win.
- Presby's most experienced twirler has lowered her ERA to 2.70 following Saturday's triumph, limiting opposing hitters to a mere .216 clip.
- This is the longest winning streak for the Blue Hose since they opened up the 2023 slate with 12 W's in a row, making it matter in do-or-die scenarios by already winning four times this month by two runs or fewer.
