HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Eagles were the first to score, but Presbyterian quickly answered behind buckets from Kindseth and
Sonia Sato. The teams went on to exchange points with Kindseth taking another two baskets, tying the score at eight points apiece. The Blue Hose broke away when
Shelby Fiddler nailed a three-pointer and
Daniella Velez followed with a triple of her own followed by a two-point jumper. Winthrop was able to take a seven-point run late in the quarter, tying the score at 17-17 after the first 10 minutes of play.
Second Quarter
The back and forth battle continued in the second quarter as each team took four points to bring the tie to 21 points apiece.
Ellie Southards swished a jumper to keep the Blue Hose in front, sending us to the media timeout at 23-21. Despite another three-point bucket from Velez, the Eagles hit the last three field goals of the quarter, bringing us to the end of the first half with PC trailing 28-26.
Third Quarter
Winthrop came out of the halftime break hot, taking the first seven-points of the half and forcing Presbyterian to use a timeout. The Eagles continued to push ahead, taking six of the next seven points and a 41-27 lead. Tal was the one to break Winthrop's streak when she sank a contested layup. Kindseth was the next to strike as she came up with a big time steal and the bucket for PC, cutting their deficit to 43-33. Four more points from Tal were countered with four from the opponents, pushing Winthrop's 10-point lead to 47-37. Just before the end of the quarter, Tal added another layup to make the score 47-39.
Fourth Quarter
The first six points of the final quarter were claimed by Winthrop, extending their lead to 53-39. The Blue Hose answered behind a three from Tal and a jumper from Kindseth, but PC still trailed 53-44. After a basket from the other side, Tal knocked down two more shots, but a bucket from the Eagles kept the difference at nine points. Kindseth hit a jumper with about two and a half minutes remaining in regulation before some solid defense from both sides brought the clock under a minute.
Shelby Fiddler and
Laney Scoggins came up with some huge baskets, cutting Winthrop's cushion to 57-54 with about 22 seconds left to play. As Presbyterian was forced to foul, the clock ran down to seven seconds when the Eagles made a pair of free throws to go up by four points. Despite the late efforts from the Blue Hose the 60-55 win went to Winthrop.
