PC Pounces in First Inning, Racks Up Eight Two-Out Runs Vs. UMES

CLINTON, S.C. – The final day of the Scotsman Invitational was a profitable one for the Presbyterian College softball team, leaping out to a six-run advantage after one inning as they downed Maryland-Eastern Shore 9-3 Sunday afternoon.

Earning their largest margin of victory this season while scoring eight total runs with two outs, the Blue Hose saw five doubles in the wire-to-wire win while seven different players recorded at least one hit.

Reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Baxleigh Arnette was effective in every facet of the game as PC defeated the Hawks, going 3-of-4 at the plate along with a walk and a career-high three stolen bases.

Junior catcher Molly Mattas blew the game open in her first at-bat with a three-RBI double to push the margin to six, the second time that Presby has posted a bases-clearing swing this year (Morgan Farthing had the other).

The Scotsmen have reached the end of a 12-game homestand to begin the campaign, winning seven of those bouts. They'll hit the road for the first time next weekend, participating in another tournament at Western Carolina.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- DP Blair Darby delivered the first RBI of the day as she went 2-for-2 with a walk, scoring Kasey Wolfe to put PC ahead.

- The next two scores from head coach David Williams' squad came on bases-loaded walks, setting the scene for Mattas to wipe the bases clean and make it 6-0 Blue Hose before the game had even advanced to the 2nd.

- UMES wouldn't go down easily, sending in the next three runs to trim the lead in half after four innings. Presbyterian responded with two more two-out runs in the bottom of the 4th, off the bat of Kendall Owens and Lanie Ruscoe.

- Wolfe put the icing on the cake with an RBI-double in the 6th, while Grace Kelley and Peyton Duncan tag-teamed the victory in the circle with a combined four hits allowed.

- PC moves to 3-0 all-time against the Hawks, winning their 18th game at home since February of 2024.

UP NEXT

- Coach Williams' roster heads to Cullowhee for five games in three days, playing the hosts of Western Carolina once while also going up against Rhode Island and North Carolina A&T twice each.
