Currie Makes Blue Hose History in 18-6 Rout over Delaware State

CLINTON, S.C. – Fueled by a record-breaking performance from newbie Emily Currie in just her second-ever home match, the Presbyterian College lacrosse team rained down the offense versus Delaware State on Sunday afternoon and blasted the Hornets 18-6.

Emphatically entering the win column for the first time on the young season, the Blue Hose secured their highest goal count in a single match since 2016 – against Howard – as Currie torched DSU for seven scores.

That's the most that any true freshman has ever scored for PC in its 19-year Division I history, now leading the roster full-stop with 11 connections in only four games.

Currie and senior Willow Hammond hit double digits by themselves with a combined 10 scores in the blowout, while the Kenzie Partsch/Hannah Savage/Kaylie Rittmueller trio all snagged a couple of goals on their path to the W.

Head coach Eric Clakeley's unit accumulated their largest margin of victory since his first year on the job (a 2020 triumph over Howard), witnessing at least four goals in all four quarters.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Fewer than six minutes into the contest, it was 3-0 Blue Hose with Currie doing the heavy lifting and hitting a hat track before the first period was even halfway complete.

- Presby obtained a 9-3 cushion going into the locker room and embarked on their longest uninterrupted scoring spree of the season in the second half with seven straight strikes.

- The blue and garnet outshot Delaware State by 13 as they improved to 8-0 all-time against the Hornets. Junior Avery West was a menace on the defensive side all game by forcing five turnovers, while Hammond and Madeleine Lowrance each won four draw controls.

- Not only did Currie accomplish a new school record for goals in a game from a rookie, but she also assisted one PC score in the second period which gave her an eight-point effort when all was said and done.

- It's the most points in one match for any Presby player – regardless of class – since Abby Edmisten hit the same mark against Kent State in 2022.

- Kayleigh Aitken was once again the starting keeper for coach Clakeley's squad, saving seven Hornet attempts while playing the first 30 minutes. She was succeeded by Naomi Lauderbaugh and freshman Morgan Thompson, who kept DSU in check and initiated the mercy rule in the 4th quarter.

UP NEXT

- Presbyterian is now one/third of the way through their six-game homestand, awaiting their next foe in a swift turnaround versus D-I debutant Mercyhurst. They'll meet the Lakers in two days for a 4:00 PM opening draw.

- ESPN+ will have live coverage of the first-time affair at Bailey Memorial Stadium, with the Blue Hose now in search of back-to-back wins after putting up 28 goals in their last two tussles.
