CLINTON, S.C. – Competing inside Bailey Memorial Stadium for the seventh time in an eight-game period and dusting off the rust from an 11-day break, the Presbyterian College lacrosse team was unsuccessful in an upset bid opposite High Point Wednesday night, dropping a 20-7 outcome.
HPU stayed perfect in the all-time series against the Blue Hose, outshooting PC by 20 and leading for all four quarters.
Presby's point production came by way of freshman
Emily Currie, who hit the back of the net three times to continue her reputation among the nation's best rookie offensive players.
She entered the Big South opener ranking eighth in the country in total goals scored among freshmen, assembling a hat trick for the second match in a row versus High Point.
The visitors cranked out 14 goals in the opening 30 minutes to pick up the win, sending the Scotsmen to a 3-7 overall mark with seven duels still left on the radar.
Head coach
Eric Clakeley's squad will hit the road this weekend in an effort to steer the ship back in the right direction, traveling to Radford for a noon start on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Coming to Clinton while still riding the high of a 14-13 takedown of Virginia Tech last week, High Point's well-rounded offense sparked at least three goals from five different players on Wednesday.
- Currie had already achieved her three scores before both sides went into the locker room for intermission, although an HPU score with 65 seconds to go in the period brought the halftime deficit to ten (14-4).
- The scoring dipped in the last two frames for the Panthers – last season's Big South Tournament runners-up – boosting 30 shots-on-goal and 22 draw controls throughout the afternoon.
- This is the third time in the last four showings that Currie has gone for at least three connections, the team-leader in total points (31) who also carries with her a 60 percent shot success rate.
- Junior keeper
Kayleigh Aitken grabbed five ground balls in a 21-minute shift while splitting time with
Naomi Lauderbaugh and
Morgan Thompson, a group that added up for 10 saves.
- PC was without the services of preseason All-Big South selection
Avery West for the first time in the junior's college career. The Texan had played in 42 consecutive contests before an injury sidelined her against HPU, responsible for a team-high 13 caused turnovers and 16 ground balls this spring.
UP NEXT
- The Blue Hose will turn their attention to Radford in 72 hours, a club that will face PC with a five-game losing streak lingering over them. The Highlanders also were bested in the conference opener on Wednesday, suffering an 18-12 setback to Winthrop in Rock Hill.
- Radford's two victories in 2025 came over Delaware State and Howard. The last time that Presby faced their divisional foe in Virginia two seasons ago, it was a landslide W for coach Clakeley's unit, winning by a 14-5 margin.
