Blue Hose Battled Hard in Two Narrow Losses to Gardner-Webb

CLINTON, S.C. – It was an eventful day at the park for the Presbyterian College softball team on Saturday afternoon (the first home series for the blue and garnet in nearly an entire month), dropping two tight meetings with Gardner-Webb by respective counts of 8-5 and 10-5.

The second half of the doubleheader was particularly looney, stretching all the way to nine innings where the Runnin' Bulldogs notched an eleventh-hour grand slam to pull out the series victory.

PC now sits at 3-8 in Big South Conference games, aiming to salvage the third bout tomorrow in another 1:00 start.

NOTABLES

- Sophomore stud Kasey Wolfe went yard twice in Game 2 and found four total hits in the DH. Five players – counting Wolfe – had multi-hit efforts as the Blue Hose almost evened the series up at one apiece, to no avail.

- Peyton Duncan (who came into the weekend with the fourth-most starts of any pitcher in America) endured one of the longest games of her career in the second round, throwing 137 times and witnessing 35 at-bats. Only five of her nine runs allowed were earned.

- Game 2 featured just about everything one can find in a single duel, as the conference rivals traded a combined 24 hits and six errors. PC reached a one-run advantage in the 5th as the win inched closer, although the Runnin' Bulldogs managed to even the scoreboard in the 7th and eventually take control with the aforementioned grand slam.

- Seniors Emma Yanes and Mallory Fletcher both posted a double during the two-parter, as Presbyterian came very close to solidifying a Sunday rubber match.

GAME ONE – GARDNER-WEBB def. PRESBYTERIAN, 8-5

- The visitors never surrendered the lead after putting up a four-spot in the opening inning, managing to scatter four more runs in the last two frames after the Blue Hose threatened late.

- Junior outfielder Morgan Farthing – who laid out for a major highlight catch midway through the next game – completed a rare play where she stole home plate to bring her squad within one run in the bottom of the 5th.

- As they would all day long, G-W had a counter strike. They'd grab a two-run single in the 6th to push their lead back to a trio, although PC once again stayed in the hunt by scavenging two scores themselves in the bottom of that same inning.

- A two-RBI double in the last stanza would give the Runnin' Bulldogs some late cushion, and despite Yanes' extra-base swing that was soon to follow, Gardner-Webb would close out the win with a strikeout.

- Wolfe, like Duncan afterward, surpassed triple digits with 119 pitches while seeing 30 batters. She struck out four and recorded all but two outs, succeeded by freshman reliever Grace Kelley.

GAME TWO – GARDNER-WEBB def. PRESBYTERIAN, 10-5 (Nine Innings)

- Officially the longest game that Presbyterian found themselves wrapped up in since March of 2024, head coach David Williams' unit knotted the score up at two thanks to Wolfe's solo bomb in the bottom of the 3rd.

- Falling behind again on an RBI-double, the Scotsmen finally grabbed their first lead of the doubleheader behind Fletcher and Farthing's back-to-back connections in the 5th.

- Now in front 4-3, PC perched on the brink of the win before the Runnin' Bulldogs pulled off a minor miracle in the top of the 7th and brought the game to yet another tie with only one out left in their tank.

- Neither team could build up the tiebreaker in the 8th, leading to a helter-skelter 9th inning that enabled G-W to tip the odds back in their favor.

- After re-taking the lead with a bases-loaded single (Webb's first advantage in four frames), they'd deliver a breathtaking blow courtesy of Jailyn Tineo who guided in the grand slam.

- Another Wolfe dinger (her fifth of the season) reenergized the scene for a moment, but consecutive K's by Alli Stidham shut the door.
