CLINTON, S.C. – A slow start from an offensive perspective translated to a 5-1 defeat in Sunday afternoon's series finale for the Presbyterian College softball team against Gardner-Webb. The visitors completed a weekend sweep, sending PC to a 19-23 record with two series remaining.
Now at 3-9 in Big South appearances, the Blue Hose have split their 24 home games with 12 losses next to 12 earlier wins. Their lone run in Game 3 against the Runnin' Bulldogs came by catcher
Molly Mattas in the last inning.
Presby hopes to turn the page in a midweek diversion from league action, as they head to North Carolina A&T this Wednesday for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM in Greensboro.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gardner-Webb managed to outhit the Scotsmen by an 11-4 count after winning two tight affairs less than 24 hours ago, producing their first score in the 2
nd which led to two more in the 5
th and 7
th.
- The Runnin' Bulldogs built a five-run advantage thanks to a couple of RBI-singles, a sacrifice fly ball, and a triple. Starter
Kasey Wolfe threw the first four stanzas in Sunday's finale, while
Peyton Duncan rounded out the next three.
- Mattas and senior
Emma Yanes each grabbed a double in the loss, bringing home
Morgan Farthing in the team's last chance with only one out recorded.
- However, Webb starter Hannah Frye wouldn't waver and forced two straight ground-outs to wrap up the sweep. She surrendered just four hits all game, never leaving the circle from start to finish.
UP NEXT
- PC already has some 2025 history with their next enemy, an NC A&T crew who they shared wins with on a neutral field before the season had seen its first full month.
- A&T pulled out a 12-11 thriller in the first of those two games, before an angry Blue Hose response led to a 10-2 run-rule victory in the rematch.
- The Bulldogs are a mere 9-30 on the year, having just gotten swept by CAA opponent Delaware in a series where they were not able to acquire a single run and got outscored 29-0.
