GREENVILLE, S.C. – In a late-season in-state rivalry matchup between two schools separated by less than an hour, the Presbyterian College lacrosse team couldn't keep up the pace from a first quarter where they held the lead, instead falling to Furman 22-11.
Senior captain
Willow Hammond produced five first-half goals – one away from her personal high – as the Blue Hose kept the Paladins off the scoreboard for the first 13 minutes of action.
Ultimately, Furman's persistence on the attack led to an 8-2 run that closed the first half as the Paladins assembled at least 20 goals for the third time in their last four appearances.
The home side would score 15 combined goals in the 2
nd and 3
rd quarters after the opening act favored PC, dropping the Scotsmen to 4-11 on the campaign.
Just two matches remain for head coach
Eric Clakeley's unit, traveling to Longwood this Saturday for a noon beginning on ESPN+.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Five of PC's first six connections came from the hands of Hammond, including her final score of the game with two ticks left in the first-half clock.
- After limiting Gardner-Webb to a single goal in the entire second half of last weekend's conference clash at Bailey Memorial Stadium, Presby nearly silenced the Paladins for all of the opening period until enabling three strikes in a two-minute window.
- Furman's first make happened with 1:59 on the first-quarter clock, the first time that anyone had scored on PC's defense in almost 30 combined minutes dating back to the G-W meeting.
- In the end, the Blue Hose strayed from Anna Roser and reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Lily Toole, a duo that combined for 14 goals at seven apiece.
- Altogether, 22 of Furman's 27 shots-on-goal were successful attempts. A 28-7 discrepancy in draw controls would further complicate Presbyterian's cause in Greenville.
- Four others hit the back of the net to join Hammond, including true freshman
Kate Dominick who submitted her first collegiate goal with 7:33 left in proceedings.
- The Paladins outgunned PC 12-5 in the last two chapters, erasing a pro-Presby beginning and advancing to 8-0 in the all-time series.
-
Kayleigh Aitken and
Naomi Lauderbaugh each played 30 minutes during Wednesday's setback, while the Blue Hose were hampered by a 13-for-23 ratio in clear attempts.
UP NEXT
- Every W matters greatly in the late stages of the '25 season, as coach Clakeley's camp aims to take down Longwood in three days. The Lancers own the worst overall win percentage of any of the nine Big South institutions, holding a total record of 1-11.
- After taming Radford 17-13, Longwood would lose their most recent feature with Furman by a 13-point differential. Last year's duel in Clinton between PC and the Lancers was a thriller, all tied up at the break before Longwood emerged victorious 16-13.
