Women’s Hoops Central: Presbyterian at Gardner-Webb

LAST TIME OUT
The Blue Hose suffered a 64-53 road defeat to UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 17) at the Templeton Center.

 

Ja'Cia Cunningham powered PC for the third straight game offensively. She led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field and 7-of-10 shooting from the free throw line. This is the second time that Cunningham has scored at least 20 points this season and the seventh time overall in her career. She has scored in double figures in three straight games.

 

Krystal Haddock had a productive afternoon as well for the Blue Hose, scoring 15 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. As a team, the Blue Hose forced 24 UNC Asheville turnovers. Three Blue Hose players logged two steals. 


 

BLUE HOSE BY THE NUMBERS
Senior Ja'Cia Cunningham leads Presbyterian offensively this season, ranking in the top 20 of the Big South averaging 10.0 points per game coming into Wednesday. She leads the Blue Hose in field goals made with 66 and is tied for second on the team in three-pointers made with 11. Senior Aminata Tal is the second-leading scorer for PC going into Wednesday's road contest, averaging 8.1 points per game. She is second on the team in field goals made with 57 this year and is second in made free throws with 27. 


Junior Ore Ogunwolere powers the Blue Hose this season in assists (43) and steals (26). She sits in ninth in the conference in assists per game with 2.53. She also leads the team in minutes per game, averaging 28. Sophomore Daniella Velez is second on the team in assists (33) and steals (23). She has started in 13 games and is third on the team in total minutes with 421.


Freshman Allie Sykes paces PC from the three-point line and the charity stripe this year. She has poured in 26 three-pointers going into Wednesday's road trip to Gardner-Webb, which ranks 14th in the league. She has also made 16 of her 18 total free throw attempts for Presbyterian. 


Freshman Aretha Linger has delivered for the Blue Hose in the first season of her collegiate career. She is tied with sophomore Morgan Boyd for the team lead in blocked shots with nine in just seven games played. Offensively, she averages 7.7 points per game to go along with shooting 41.7 percent from the field.



CAREER-HIGHS
Several Blue Hose players have had career-highs so far in conference play. Krystal Haddock tied her career-high with 8 rebounds against UNC Asheville on Saturday. She also had 8 rebounds earlier in the season against Longwood. Amani Williams has grabbed a career-high seven rebounds in each of Presbyterian's last two games. Against USC Upstate on the road (Jan. 14), she also recorded a career-high three steals. Ja'Cia Cunningham drained three three-pointers against the Spartans, setting a new season-high and tying her career-high.


Haddock and Morgan Boyd each had career games at Longwood (Jan. 3). Haddock scored a career-high 18 points to lead all scorers. Boyd poured in a career-high 16 points for PC, making 8-of-12 free throws on the afternoon (both career-highs as well). 

 


SCOUTING THE RUNNIN' BULLDOGS
Gardner-Webb comes into Wednesday's game with a 3-2 conference record and a 6-13 overall record. The Runnin' Bulldogs bounced back after a loss to Radford with a 52-45 victory over Charleston Southern in the team's last outing on Saturday. Amina Gray powers Gardner-Webb offensively, averaging 12.3 points per contest. Makayla Leggette leads the team in assists and has earned Big South Freshman of the Week honors twice this season. As a team, Gardner-Webb is third in the league in steals, averaging 10.4 per game. Head coach Terri Williams is in her first season at the helm of the Runnin' Bulldogs.

 


PRESBYTERIAN – GARDNER-WEBB ALL-TIME SERIES
The Blue Hose control the all-time series with Gardner-Webb, leading 39-26 in a series that dates back to 1986. The Runnin' Bulldogs have dominated the head-to-head as of late, winning 9 of the past 10 meetings. Gardner-Webb has won six straight against PC overall. Presbyterian last won in Boiling Springs in 2020.

 


BLUE HOSE ROSTER
Joining the Blue Hose this season are nine newcomers (four transfers and five freshmen). The transfers for Coach Sardin are Ore Ogunwolere (Union College), Ja'Cia Cunningham (Chicago State), Krystal Haddock (Tennessee State), and Laetitia Kamdoum (Cochise College).

Freshmen Aretha Linger, Yolanda Floyd, Allie Sykes, Samantha Mullock, and Amani Williams also join the Blue Hose. This is the most freshmen the Blue Hose have had on the roster since the 2022-23 season (also five).

 
The Blue Hose also return four from last year's roster. Seniors Shelby Fiddler and Aminata Tal lead the returners for PC. Sophomores Morgan Boyd and Daniella Velez also are back for the Blue Hose this season.
