Presbyterian Drops Road Contest at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team (3-18, 1-7 Big South) suffered a 74-42 defeat on Wednesday night (Jan. 28) to Winthrop at the Winthrop Coliseum.

 

The Blue Hose stayed with the Eagles in the first quarter but were outscored 56-27 the remainder of the game. Winthrop controlled the game on both ends, shooting 51.7 percent as a team and holding PC to just 25.0 percent shooting from the field. 


Krystal Haddock recorded her second straight double-double for the Blue Hose, leading PC with 16 points and 12 rebounds (eight offensive). She now has two double-doubles in her collegiate career, both coming in the last two games. She finished the night with four made field goals and went 8-of-12 from the free throw line.

 

Daniella Velez poured in three treys from the outside for the Blue Hose, tying her career-high. She finished the game with nine points, recording three steals as well. As a team, the Blue Hose outrebounded the Eagles 39-37. Ore Ogunwolere grabbed seven rebounds, while Aminata Tal logged five. 

  


HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

Winthrop took control of the game right out of the gate, opening the contest on a 10-2 run. Ore Ogunwolere and Krystal Haddock helped get PC back into the game in the following minutes, but the Eagles still led 16-8 with two minutes left in the first quarter. Showing their resiliency, the Blue Hose finished the period strong, using a 7-2 run to close the deficit. Haddock was productive on both ends for PC, finishing the first with a game-high seven points and four boards. Aminata Tal added a jumper off a Winthrop turnover in the final seconds to trail just 18-15 through 10 minutes. The Blue Hose outrebounded the Eagles 10-6 in the first.

 


Second Quarter
Haddock stayed hot to start the second quarter, closing the gap to one after a second-chance layup. However, Winthrop opened the game up in the following minutes, embarking on a 10-0 to go up double digits. Cunningham ended the run, but the second quarter was all Winthrop. The Eagles went into the break up 38-23 over Presbyterian. The Eagles were on fire offensively, shooting 64 percent (16-of-25) from the field in the half. Haddock closed out the half with nine points and five rebounds (four offensive) for Presbyterian.

 

 

Third Quarter
Winthrop continued its momentum in the second half, beginning the third quarter on an 8-0 run. Velez got Presbyterian on the board in the third with her second three of the night, but Winthrop kept its commanding lead. In the closing minutes of the quarter, Haddock continued her big night, scoring five points down the stretch. Cunningham added two free throws as well, but the Eagles poured in a three in the closing seconds to go up 57-33 after three quarters of play.

 

 

Fourth Quarter
Velez opened the scoring for the Blue Hose in the final period, drilling her third three of the evening. Amani Williams added her first points of the contest halfway through the quarter, hitting two free throws. Tal and Haddock closed out the scoring for Presbyterian in the fourth, but the Eagles went on to pick up a 74-42 Big South win in Rock Hill.
