FARMVILLE, Va. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team (2-13, 0-2) fell on the road to Longwood 89-56 in Big South action on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 3) at the Joan Perry Brock Center.
After PC led for much of the first quarter, the Lancers outscored the Blue Hose 69-37 over the remaining three quarters to pick up the win.
Krystal Haddock and Morgan Boyd each delivered career nights offensively for the Blue Hose. Haddock scored a career-high 18 points to lead all scorers on 8-of-10 shooting from the field. Boyd poured in a career-high 16 points for PC, making 8-of-12 free throws on the afternoon (both career-highs as well).
Haddock tied her career-high on the glass, grabbing eight rebounds to lead the Blue Hose. Boyd pitched in seven boards for Presbyterian. As a team, the Blue Hose shot 41.2 percent from the floor and forced 18 Longwood turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Both teams started the game fast offensively. Daniella Velez opened the scoring for the Blue Hose with a three off an assist from Ore Ogunwolere. The Lancers retook the lead right after, but back-to-back baskets from Krystal Haddock put PC up 7-5 three minutes into the game. After that, both teams began to trade leads from one another in the middle of the quarter. Late in the period, Aminata Tal scored her first points of the game off an inbounds pass before a steal by Ogunwolere gave the Blue Hose a 15-13 advantage. Two more baskets from Haddock in the final two minutes put Presbyterian up 19-16, but Longwood ended the quarter with four straight points to take a 20-19 lead. Haddock led all scorers with 8 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting.
Second Quarter
Turnovers plagued the Blue Hose in the second period, as the Lancers began to separate from Presbyterian. Longwood jumped on PC out of the gate, growing its lead to eight two minutes into the quarter. A layup from Haddock got the Blue Hose within six, but Longwood followed with a big run to build its lead. The Lancers embarked on a 13-1 run to grab a 40-22 advantage with two minutes to play in the half. Morgan Boyd made a jumper to end the run, but Longwood went into the half up 43-24 on the Blue Hose.
Third Quarter
Amani Williams scored her first points of the afternoon to get the Blue Hose going in the second half. However, the Lancers continued to grow their lead. Tal and Boyd added baskets for Presbyterian in the middle of the period, but Longwood stretched the lead to 30. Late in the third, Haddock continued her career night with two more baskets before the Lancers added one more at the buzzer to go up 67-37.
Fourth Quarter
After a Longwood bucket to open the final period, baskets from Tal and Williams got PC on the board in the fourth. Samantha Mullock followed minutes later with her first points of the afternoon. Boyd had a productive fourth quarter offensively for the Blue Hose, finishing the game with 16 points. Haddock scored the final points of the game for Presbyterian to end the afternoon with 18 points, but Longwood dominated to an 89-56 home win in Big South play.
