CLINTON, S.C. – Day one of the Scotsman Invitational was a tale of two drastically-different outcomes for the Presbyterian College softball team, erasing a 6-1 deficit to shock Mercyhurst in a 10-7 final count before ending the DH with a 14-1 loss to ETSU on Friday.
Five different PC players had a two-hit performance against either opponent, as head coach
David Williams' gang found their best offensive showing of the young season to cut down the Dolphins.
Transfer pitcher
Avery Robinson logged her first win in a Blue Hose uniform as Presby ended the Mercyhurst matchup on a 9-1 flurry. Included in that stretch was a five-run 5
th inning.
After splitting Friday's two-parter, PC will turn right around for another pair tomorrow in the second stage of the tournament. They are scheduled to face UAlbany at 2:30 on Saturday, which will precede another round with Mercyhurst at approximately 4:45.
NOTABLES
- Not only did Robinson pick up the W thanks to 4.2 innings of one-hit ball, she also went 2-of-4 at the plate along with an RBI single in that same contest.
- The freshman tandem of
Hali Duke and
Cierra Grice (second and third base, respectively) were both difference-makers in the Mercyhurst victory, combining for four doubles and five RBI to help launch the comeback.
- While keeping it inside the park, Presbyterian accounted for seven extra-base hits in the win over the Dolphins. First-baseman
Blair Darby posted a double and a triple to help her squad score nine of the game's final 10 runs.
- Five days after her first career home run to lift PC past Morehead State, Duke's three RBI are the most in a single game by any player on the roster at this point of the campaign.
GAME ONE – Presbyterian def. Mercyhurst, 10-7
- It was a frightful start for the Blue Hose on Friday the 13
th, giving up four runs in two innings and witnessing a five-run hole after a two-run homer in the 3
rd stanza.
- Presbyterian turned the tables in a hurry, however, pulling to within two on Darby's triple, a Robinson RBI, and a run-scoring single from pinch hitter
Audrey Burton.
- Mercyhurst cleared the fence for a third time in the 5
th to regain control, but they quickly lost their grip in the bottom of that same inning as the Blue Hose kept getting on-base.
- Grice brought
Morgan Farthing home on her second double of the day to even up the score at seven apiece, and PC took the lead for good after a Dolphin throwing error and another RBI knock by
Gracie DeCuir.
- Duke doubled again in the 6
th to give the Scotsmen their largest lead of the game, concluding the scoring from both sides and turning it over to Robinson who closed it out in the circle.
- Mercyhurst managed just one base-runner in the last two innings after PC flipped the script, giving the home side their third win of the year.
GAME TWO – ETSU def. Presbyterian, 14-1
- It wasn't as pretty for PC in the nightcap, falling behind 5-0 to the Bucs and conceding nine runs in the 6
th and 7
th frames.
- Presby's lone score of Game Two came from
Avery Fielden's legs, beating out a throw from second-base to reach home safely on a fielder's choice.
- ETSU pitcher Marissa Barnes grabbed the win in four innings of work, while reliever Eden Muncy didn't let any hits come through after that.
