Softball Wins Two Against UAlbany & Mercyhurst

CLINTON, S.C. – The scoreboard looked vastly different when comparing the two games that featured the Presbyterian College softball team on Saturday evening, although the winning side was exactly the same as PC blanked UAlbany (1-0) and then blew out Mercyhurst (12-3).

Two-way terror Avery Robinson pitched a complete-game shutout against the Great Danes, holding UAlbany to only three hits as she grabbed her second victory in less than 24 hours.

After taking a defensive approach to the first half of Saturday's doubleheader, Presby's bats came alive in the next outing as they beat Mercyhurst for the second straight day.

Head coach David Williams' lineup calculated a season-high 14 hits (eleven of which were singles) to gobble up their first mercy-rule win of 2026.

A suboptimal weather forecast for Sunday has canceled the remainder of PC's second tournament, although they'll be back on their home turf this Wednesday when Wofford makes the short drive from Spartanburg.

The Blue Hose improved their overall record to 5-3 by winning back-to-back, needing just two pitchers all day to get those results. Senior Peyton Duncan also lined up a complete game (albeit two innings fewer) in the nightcap.

NOTABLES

- Robinson, Hali Duke, and Blair Darby were practically impossible outs for Mercyhurst to try and deal with, going 9-of-10 between them.

- Sophomore shortstop Baxleigh Arnette put a big punctuation mark on the lopsided win with a bases-clearing double in the 4th inning, part of a game-ending 8-0 avalanche.

- Robinson has been Presbyterian's MVP through the first two weeks of the season, leading the way in both batting average (.417) and ERA (0.89). She has allowed just two earned runs over 15.2 innings.

- Seven different PC players registered at least one RBI in the Mercyhurst mauling, including junior catcher Logan Grice who came less than five feet away from a home run in the 4th and also smashed a triple for the first two scores of the game.

- After eight games, two Blue Hose freshmen have added up for 12 RBI: third-baseman Cierra Grice and Duke. They posted 10 combined hits in 12 plate appearances across Saturday's twinbill.

GAME ONE: Presbyterian def. UAlbany, 1-0

- It took some time for PC's bats to wake up against a UAlbany team with some close losses on their resume, but offense wasn't entirely necessary in this particular contest thanks to Robinson's brilliance in the circle.

- The Ohio native tallied four 1-2-3 innings and did not allow a sole base-runner over her last nine at-bats.

- UAlbany's only scoring threat came in the 5th due to an infield error, but Robinson stranded runners in the corners with a strikeout and a groundball to Duke.

- Rookie centerfielder Ava Coggins was responsible for the game's only run in the bottom of the 5th, bringing in Cierra Grice on a base hit to left center.

- Robinson did the rest from there, needing fewer than 100 pitches to last the full seven innings and never walking anyone she faced.

GAME TWO: Presbyterian def. Mercyhurst, 12-3 (Five Innings)

- The pinstripes pulverized the Lakers after launching a five-run comeback against them the previous night, turning a 4-0 advantage after three innings into an all-out rout in the next stanza.

- Presby successfully reached base nine times in the 4th frame (seven hits and two errors), the program's highest-scoring singular inning since February of 2024 in another run-rule W over Norfolk State.

- Duncan struck out six to aid in the team's fifth win of the semester, walking one of 22 batters and pitching four scoreless innings.

- The last time that PC defeated an opponent by nine runs or more was at a neutral site last season, beating Rhode Island by 10.
