ASHEVILLE, N.C. –
Jaylen Peterson knocks down two free throws in the closing seconds, as the Presbyterian Blue Hose (13-14, Big South: 6-6) topped the UNC Asheville Bulldogs (12-14, Big South: 6-6), 58-57, on the road on Saturday afternoon.
Peterson led all scorers with 20 points while also grabbing eight rebounds.
Carl Parrish connected on three three-point field goals on his way to 13 points.
Jonah Pierce recorded another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Triston Wilson rounded out Presbyterian's double-figure scorers with 10 points while also dishing out six assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF – Parrish scored the Blue Hose's first two points in a driving layup. UNC Asheville scored nine of the game's first 13 points, taking a five-point lead five minutes into the contest. A three from Parrish and a jump shot in the lane by Peterson tied the score at nine. The Bulldogs scored five straight points to regain the lead, 14-9. The Blue Hose tied the score at 16 after two inside scores from Peterson and a three from Parrish. UNC Asheville would go back in front after scoring six of the next eight points. A three from Parrish and a layup from Wilson, the Blue Hose took their first lead of the game, 23-22, with 7:20 on the clock. UNC Asheville scored seven of the half's final 12 points, taking a 30-27 halftime lead.
SECOND HALF – Presbyterian began the half on a 10-4 scoring run to take a 37-34 lead after a three from the wing by
Josh Pickett five minutes into the second half. UNC Asheville scored five straight points, retaking the lead, 39-37. Baskets from Peterson, Pierce, and Wilson pushed the Blue Hose back in front, 43-39. The Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run to take a 48-43 lead with 9:03 on the clock. Presbyterian scored eight of the next 10 points, taking a 51-50 lead after a dunk from Peterson. UNC Asheville scored five straight points to move back in front 55-51 with five minutes on the clock. Presbyterian cut UNC Asheville's lead to one point a couple of times, including when Wilson scored on a jumper in a lane with 58 seconds on the clock. The Blue Hose held UNC Asheville scoreless on their next possessions. With four seconds left on the clock, Peterson drove to the basket, attempting to score inside. Peterson was fouled, he went to the line and converted two free throws, putting PC in front 58-57. UNC Asheville's Kameron Taylor, who led UNC Asheville with 19 points, had a shot at the buzzer to win the game, but he was not able to convert on his three-point attempt from the top of the key.
