ASHEVILLE, N.C. –
Amani Williams and
Yolanda Floyd scored in double-figures as the Presbyterian Blue Hose (3-22, Big South: 1-11) battled but came up short in a 62-50 loss to the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs (10-16, Big South: 7-5) at the Templeton Center on Saturday afternoon.
Williams and Floyd scored 10 points apiece.
Ja'Cia Cunningham scored nine points, and
Aminata Tal chipped in with eight points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER – Tal scored the game's first basket with a driving layup 52 seconds into the contest. Gardner-Webb scored 11 of the next 13 points, taking an 11-4 lead with 3:45 left in the quarter. The Blue Hose scored four of the final seven points of the quarter to cut Gardner-Webb's lead to 14-8.
SECOND QUARTER –
Daniella Velez got the Blue Hose within three points with an early three from the wing. With 5:53 on the clock, Gardner-Webb had pushed its lead to nine points, 20-11. PC went on an 8-0 scoring run over the next three minutes, cutting Gardner-Webb's lead to 20-19 after
Ore Ogunwolere made a free throw with 2:57 on the clock. Floyd scored four points during the run. Gardner-Webb closed the half on an 8-0 run of their own, taking a 28-19 halftime lead.
THIRD QUARTER – Over the first five minutes of the quarter, Gardner-Webb outscored the Blue Hose 14-6 to take control of the game. The Runnin' Bulldogs held a 53-33 lead after three quarters.
FOURTH QUARTER – With 5:34 left in the quarter, Gardner-Webb held a 60-36 lead. The Blue Hose went on a 12-0 run, cutting the Runnin' Bulldogs lead to 60-48 after two free throws from Williams with two minutes left in the game. Cunningham, Ogunwolere, and Floyd also scored during the run. However, Presbyterian was not able to get any closer.
