CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team (3-26, 1-15 Big South) played its final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 28), suffering an 89-57 defeat to Longwood at the Templeton Center.
Before the game, the Blue Hose honored three players for Senior Day: Aminata Tal, Shelby Fiddler, and Morgan Boyd.
For the game, Longwood shot 46 percent from the field and forced 36 Blue Hose turnovers to earn the win. Daniella Velez continued her hot stretch offensively for the Blue Hose, leading the team with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Her 17 points and seven made field goals are both new career-highs.
Krystal Haddock and Yolanda Floyd also scored in double figures for Presbyterian, scoring 12 apiece. Floyd's 12 points are a career-high. Defensively, the Blue Hose forced 20 Longwood turnovers and recorded 10 steals on the afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Daniella Velez was on fire to begin the game for the Blue Hose, scoring six of PC's first 10 points of the game. Additional baskets from Aminata Tal and Amani Williams gave the Blue Hose an early lead up 10-8 halfway through the quarter. Longwood went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead and establish control. However, in the final seconds, Velez beat the buzzer with a layup to continue her hot start and cut the deficit to three. The Lancers led 15-12 after one quarter of play.
Second Quarter
Longwood scored the first two baskets of the second period before Velez drilled a three to get Presbyterian within four. Longwood kept PC at an arm's length, but two made free throws by Samantha Mullock kept PC within five. The Blue Hose trailed by as few as four in the second quarter before Longwood began to take control and grow the lead. The Lancers dominated the rest of the half, grabbing a 39-23 advantage at the break. Yolanda Floyd scored four points at the end of the half, while Krystal Haddock added a basket as well.
Third Quarter
Floyd and Haddock kept PC within 15 to start the second half, scoring PC's first points of the quarter. However, Longwood answered right back with another run. The Lancers separated from the Blue Hose, growing the lead to 20. Ja'Cia Cunnungham made two baskets for the Blue Hose offensively in the closing minutes. Mullock scored off an offensive rebound as time expired, but Presbyterian still trailed 67-41 going into the final period of the afternoon.
Fourth Quarter
Haddock and Velez picked up where they left off offensively in the fourth quarter, contributing buckets for the Blue Hose. Floyd added four more points in the final quarter to finish the game with a career-high 12 points. Velez and Haddock also scored in double figures, but the Lancers closed out the game with an 89-57 victory.
