Presbyterian College stormed back from an 18-point deficit but ultimately fell short at home to USC Upstate 70-63 on Wednesday night (Feb. 4) at the Templeton Center.
Ja'Cia Cunningham led the way for Presbyterian, scoring 22 points. She did most of her work from the free throw line, making 13 of her 17 attempts. Aminata Tal and Daniella Velez also scored in double figures, adding 13 and 11 points respectively.
As a team, the Blue Hose were disruptive defensively, forcing 27 USC Upstate turnovers. Ore Ogunwolere, Velez, and Tal all recorded three steals apiece.
BLUE HOSE BY THE NUMBERS
Senior Ja'Cia Cunningham has been hot for Presbyterian as of late, averaging 15.7 points per game in her last six games. She has led the Blue Hose all year offensively, leading the team with 11.9 points per game. She ranks 11th in the Big South in scoring. In conference play, she is averaging 12.9 points per contest. Aminata Tal has also heated up offensively for the Blue Hose recently, averaging 12.8 points in her last five games. She has scored in double figures in four of her last five and is the second-leading scorer for Presbyterian on the season (9.1 points per game).
Junior Ore Ogunwolere has played a major role for PC all year, leading the team in several different categories. She leads the team in assists (55), steals (44), and minutes per game (29.6). She is sixth in the league in steals per game and ninth in assists. Sophomore Daniella Velez is second on the team in assists (34) and steals (32).
Freshman Allie Sykes powers the Blue Hose from distance and the free throw line in 2026. She has poured in 27 threes entering the weekend, also making 21 of her 23 total free throw attempts (91.3 percent).
Sophomore Krystal Haddock has been on a tear for Presbyterian in conference play, especially on the glass. In league play, she is averaging 9.4 points to go along with 7.7 rebounds per game. She has recorded double-digit rebounds in three of her last four games. On the year, she leads the team in rebounding with 5.7 per game. She also has logged two double-doubles (the only two for any PC player this season).
CAREER-HIGHS
Several Blue Hose players have had career-highs in conference play this year. Against USC Upstate on Wednesday night, Ja'Cia Cunningham had a career day from the free throw line, making 13 of her 17 attempts (both career-highs). Daniella Velez also tied her career-highs against the Spartans in scoring (11 points) and three-pointers made (three). In PC's previous game at High Point, Ore Ogunwolere and Aminata Tal both tied their career-highs in steals, posting six and five respectively. In Presbyterian's 50-46 Big South victory over Gardner-Webb on Jan. 21, Tal tied her career-high with nine made field goals. Ogunwolere recorded a career-high eight rebounds for the Blue Hose against the Runnin' Bulldogs. She also tied her career-high in assists with six.
NEW PROGRAM RECORD
Krystal Haddock delivered a record-breaking performance in PC's last matchup against Charleston Southern on Jan. 23. She grabbed a single-game program record 12 offensive rebounds against the Buccaneers, shattering the previous record of nine. For her efforts, she was named PC Student-Athlete of the Week on Jan. 27.
SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS
Charleston Southern comes into the weekend with a 6-17 overall record and a 5-5 mark in the Big South. The Buccaneers sit in fourth in the conference, dropping their most recent game on Wednesday evening to UNC Asheville 60-48 at home. Tyonna Bailey has been one of the most productive players in the league for the Buccaneers. She leads the team and ranks second in scoring in the Big South, averaging 16.8 points per game. Asha Sra has also been productive for the Buccaneers, leading the Big South in assists with 4.5 per game. Head coach Clarisse White is in her fifth season at the helm of the Buccaneers.
PRESBYTERIAN – CHARLESTON SOUTHERN ALL-TIME SERIES
The Blue Hose narrowly control the all-time series dating back to 1981, leading the Buccaneers 21 to 20. Charleston Southern has won three straight against PC, including 77-73 earlier this season in Clinton. Krystal Haddock broke PC's single-game offensive rebounding record with 12 in that contest. Presbyterian's last victory in Charleston came on Jan. 7, 2023.
BLUE HOSE ROSTER
Joining the Blue Hose this season are nine newcomers (four transfers and five freshmen). The transfers for Coach Sardin are Ore Ogunwolere (Union College), Ja'Cia Cunningham (Chicago State), and Krystal Haddock (Tennessee State).
Freshmen Aretha Linger, Yolanda Floyd, Allie Sykes, Samantha Mullock, and Amani Williams also join the Blue Hose. This is the most freshmen the Blue Hose have had on the roster since the 2022-23 season (also five).
The Blue Hose also return four from last year's roster. Seniors Shelby Fiddler and Aminata Tal lead the returners for PC. Sophomores Morgan Boyd and Daniella Velez also are back for the Blue Hose this season.
