SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Although the Presbyterian College softball team was able to shut out their South Carolina rivals in five separate innings during Wednesday night's non-conference rematch, PC was unable to shake a slow start as Wofford ended up on top by a 6-2 count.
Junior two-way
Avery Robinson faced 20 batters in relief and did not give up any runs (similar to her round one effort in this series where she also blanked them through five), but a six-spot from the home squad before she entered in the early going was the difference.
The difficulty of Presbyterian's non-conference schedule has been glaring this year, with Wofford going into the midweeker at number 72 in the latest NCAA RPI rankings.
Head coach
David Williams' roster will now sit for a nine-day rest period before their next opponent, returning to Big South terrain by visiting Radford on the final weekend of March.
FINAL SCORE: Wofford, 6 – Presbyterian, 2
RECORDS: Presbyterian (13-18, 2-1) | Wofford (20-4)
LOCATION: Hope Field (Spartanburg, S.C.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior leftfielder
Morgan Farthing delivered the first score of the evening on a 1
st-frame sacrifice fly, sending in rookie
Cierra Grice.
- The Terriers stranded a couple runners in their first turn at-bat, but piled up six runs in the next stanza to assume a comfortable lead. Their .363 team batting average currently ranks 12
th in America.
- Whereas Wofford scored all five of their runs in the final two innings when they last met PC in February, the exact opposite occurred in the rematch as they stacked all six runs in the 2
nd.
- Robinson stepped into the circle and did not let that lead balloon any further for the remainder of the game. She also boomed a solo homer in the top of the 3
rd, her first longball in a Blue Hose uniform.
- Neither side made their way back to home plate the rest of the way, improving the Terriers to an impressive 18-1 on their home turf.
- Despite the loss, PC keeps up an encouraging statistic from the freshman combo of Grice and
Hali Duke. They have produced at least one hit between them in 21 straight contests, a streak that dates back three-and-a-half weeks.
- Robinson maintains her status as the only pitcher in the entire Big South with an ERA below 3.00 (currently at 2.75). She earned a six-out save in Sunday's series victory against Winthrop back in Clinton.
