Women’s Soccer Takes One-Point Loss to Gardner-Webb

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team was embroiled in their fourth one-score match of the 2026 season on Wednesday night at Martin Stadium, tying Gardner-Webb in the 78th minute but ultimately coming up short by a 2-1 differential.

All but one of PC's losses this year have come by a single point, as the Runnin' Bulldogs sank the game-winning goal with just under eight minutes left in the contest.

Sophomore Maddi Merryweather's first make of the season lifted the Blue Hose to a 1-1 tie on a night where they narrowly outshot G-W 15-14. In the end, Webb earned their second straight one-point victory against a battle-hardened PC unit.

Presby will take a one-week break before returning to the pitch, continuing the Big South Conference gauntlet against USC Upstate in Spartanburg. That match will take place at seven o'clock next Wednesday.

FINAL SCORE: Gardner-Webb, 2 – Presbyterian, 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Norwegian freshman Ingeborg Blystad made her collegiate debut as the starting keeper, nearly turning in a spotless first half until the visitors scored at 42:44.

- Trailing by one at intermission, PC unleashed four on-target attempts in their bid to tie things up while the back line kept the Runnin' Bulldogs from adding to their advantage.

- Anna Hussey found Merryweather from close-range to give the home side the payoff they were searching for, the Kentucky native's second career goal against a Big South opponent.

- Merryweather tried for a brace two minutes later, but the second boot drifted off to the right of the net. Webb's Julia McBride connected on the game-winner for her sixth goal of the campaign in the 82nd minute.

- Rookie Ella Duncan and sophomore Emma Gesser also made their first starts of the semester next to Blystad, who saved two of Gardner-Webb's four on-target looks.

- Senior defenseman Lyla Chadd was not in the starting lineup for the first time in her decorated career, although she still roamed the field for 72 minutes to continue her 58-game playing streak.
