John O'Neil

John O'Neil

O’Neil comes to PC from the University of Tennessee at Martin where he spent one season as an assistant coach. He worked with all infield positions, base runners, assisted with team offense and coached third base while also overseeing team travel, field maintenance, scouting reports and other duties. 

O'Neil just completed his seventh season with the Blue Hose in the spring of 2025.

During his time with the Blue Hose, O'Neil has spent time working with the Blue Hose infielders along with base running. He also assists with the Presbyterian offense as well.

In 2025, O'Neil's first season with the title of Associate Head Coach, he guided Trey Fenderson to his Second Team All-Conference honor after leading the Blue Hose with a .374 batting average. In the team's 11–8 win over #23 Alabama, O’Neil helped the offense produce 11 runs on 11 hits, including doubles from three PC batters.

The 2024 season saw junior Joel Dragoo record one of the best-ever offensive seasons by a PC player. Dragoo set the program's DI records for home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage, total bases, OBP, and walks. Dragoo was named Big South Player of the Year after the regular season. O'Neil was promoted to Associate Head Coach prior to the 2025 season.

The 2023 season saw junior Brody Fahr tally the best offensive season by a PC player since 2015 as Fahr posted a .361 average with a team-high 73 hits and 12 doubles. He recorded 23 multi-hit games and had at least one hit in 42 games.

PC offensive players earned three weekly honors as Trey Fenderson (Freshman), Dalton Reeves (Player) and Amman Dewberry (Freshman) were recognized by the league throughout the 2023 season.

The 2022 season saw the team led by senior Eric Toth who earned the program first first-team all-conference since 2018 when Jonathan White earned the honor. On the field, Toth finished in the top 10 of the single-season DI record book, ranked first in runs (54), fourth on-base percentage (.422), tied for fourth in stolen bases (16) and fifth in batting average (.351).

In 2021 season PC set a pair of program first as the Blue Hose won their first Big South Championship in program history with two wins over Campbell and a victory over Gardner-Webb. PC earned a spot in the Nashville regional that saw them face host Vanderbilt and Indiana State.

PC as a team connected on 47 homers which is tied for second in the Blue Hose DI record book. Zacchaeus Rasberry led the way with 10 homers and Eric Toth added nine while Sean Klein finished with eight.Rasberry also finished his Blue Hose career with 41 steals, most by a PC DI player. 

During the 2020 season, PC was tied for third in the Big South with nine home runs led by senior Tannor Byrd with three and Garrett Jones and Kyle Merkle with two apiece. The Blue Hose also swiped 22 bases in 16 games led by Zacchaeus Rasberry who had seven and David Sweat who recorded five steals.

In 2019, the Blue Hose offense to its highest run total in the D1 era as PC scored 327 runs, the most in the Division I era, and had 17 different players scoring runs including Rasberry scoring a team-high 45. PC also swiped a D1 record with 90 stolen base led by Rasberry with his single season record 23. Presbyterian drew a D1 record 218 walks and second-most hit by pitches with 60. The Blue Hose hit 103 doubles, the second most in the Division I era, led by Nick Guimbarda with 17 doubles. 

Prior to his time with the Skyhawks, O’Neil previously served as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, a member of the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference, where he was responsible for managing all recruiting efforts and overseeing team offense and infielders during the 2017 season.

He served as the Hawks’ interim head coach from January 2015 through August 2016, leading the program to their most non-conference wins (nine) in 2016 and most conference wins (14) in 2015. Under his guidance, the program also saw its most wins over a two-year span (32) in over two decades. Not just focused on the field, the Hawks earned consecutive Male Team Scholar Awards for having the department’s highest team GPA and saw 25 MEAC All-Academic honorees. O’Neil also oversaw the program’s improved fundraising campaigns, playing facility, player equipment and community service involvement

O’Neil served as an assistant coach at Maryland Eastern Shore from August 2011 until he assumed the role of interim coach. In 2012, he assisted the Hawks to a then program-best 11 conference wins and a third place finish in the MEAC Tournament.

During the summer of 2011, O’Neil coached the Middlesex Rays of the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League. He oversaw the expansion team during their first season with the collegiate wooden bat league.

During the 2010-11 baseball season, O’Neil served as the top assistant at the University of the Sciences, which is located in Philadelphia, Pa. He helped guide the NCAA Division-II team to its most conference wins, first conference tournament appearance, first conference tournament win, two First Team All-CACC players, a First Team All-Region infielder and two All-Academic honorees.

From 2008-10, O’Neil was the lead assistant at Colby-Sawyer College, a NCAA Division-III program located in New London, NH. He assisted the team to a conference tournament appearance while coaching three All-CCC players, an All-Region selection and two All-Academic honorees.

O’Neil played collegiately at Colby-Sawyers College from 2004-08, serving as the team’s starting catcher and designated hitter. At the prep level, he received state awards as an infielder at Burrillville High School in Rhode Island.

O’Neil graduated in 2008 with a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Sciences with a focus on Sport Management. In 2010, he completed his masters in Sport and Recreation Management with a focus in Coaching from New England College.
