Liam Smith

Liam Smith was announced as Presbyterian's newest addition on May 2, 2023, assuming the role of directing the Blue Hose defensive line. Smith is an individual who brings nearly a decade of defensive instruction to the table including a partnership with current PC head coach Steve Englehart at Florida Tech for two years.

“The opportunity to reunite with Liam and add him to our staff is a very exciting proposition”, remarked Englehart on Smith’s hiring. “He not only adds a great deal of experience to our defensive staff but is a tireless recruiter as well. Liam has already built great relationships with our players and will continue to do so, giving them the tools to be successful on and off the field”.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to be working with Coach E again”, commented Smith on his arrival in Clinton, following on from a three-year stint at The Citadel. “Coach Englehart is a leader of men and continues to do a fantastic job guiding his program where it needs to be. I have greatly enjoyed my time on the Blue Hose staff thus far, getting familiar with the players and creating that bond. Our defensive line progressed a great deal over the spring slate, and are a group that’s fun to coach and come ready to work every day”.

A native of Mahwah, New Jersey, Smith began his extensive coaching career in 2013 as a graduate assistant at Georgia State University in Atlanta, directing the safeties and outside linebackers during the school’s transitional season to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level. Smith was elevated to Director of Player Personnel / pro liaison at GSU in January 2016, a title he held for over a year until moving to Fordham University.

While in The Bronx with the Rams, Smith was again Director of Player Personnel as a Quality Control coach on the defensive end of the field, going on to accept a position at Florida Tech underneath Englehart in February 2018. As a recruiting coordinator, Smith coached the Panthers’ defensive line and outside linebackers to 13 combined victories over two seasons, placing third in the Gulf South Conference his first year.

Residing in Charleston since July 2020 as an assistant for The Citadel, Smith transitioned from defensive quality control in his inaugural season with the Bulldogs to the title of recruiting coordinator and D-line coach over the ensuing two years.

Smith received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in History with a concentration in Education alongside a minor in Psychology.
