CLINTON, SC - Presbyterian College women's soccer team shook off a cold start to defeat Mars Hill College 6-0 in the first round of the Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament today.
PC took a early 1-0 advantage at the 5:45 mark as senior forward Ashley Davies (Greenville, SC) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Jessi Adair (Decatur, GA). The Blue Hose had several more chances first half, outshooting the Lady Lions 16-0, but could not find the back of the net.
The second half was a different story as PC scored three goals in the first eight minutes of action to take a 4-0 lead. Davies added her second goal at the day at the 48:10 mark off an assist from Adair followed by an Adair goal at the 49:50 mark. Sophomore midfielder Robyn Frederick (Lexington, SC) assisted on Adair's goal. Freshman defender Delisa Smith (Anderson, SC) added a goal at the 53:20 mark off and assist from junior defender Kim Counts (Charleston, SC). PC's junior defender Shannon McCall (Greenville, SC) added a goal at the 56:04 mark off an assist from Adair, her third assist of the day to give PC a commanding 5-0 lead.
The scoring ended with a own goal by the Lady Lions at the 65:20 mark. Mars Hill ends their season at 6-13 overall while Presbyterian improves to 11-4-1 overall and advances to the semifinals versus the winner of the #6 Lenoir-Rhyne at #3 Catawba match also played today. The semifinals will take place in Greeneville, TN on the host campus of Tusculum College on Saturday, October 28 at 2:00 pm. The women's soccer championship match will take place on Sunday at 4:00 pm as part of the South Atlantic Conference's Fall Festival this weekend.
Mars Hill's sophomore goalkeeper Lara Humphreys (Greeneville, TN) tallied 8 saves while allowing three goals while junior keeper Julie Buckner (Asheville, NC) allowed three goals while picking up three saves. PC's tandem of junior keeper Lara Johnson (Hilliard, OH) and freshman Aimee Tatom (Irving, TX) combined for the shutout while Tatom registered three saves.
