FLORENCE, SC - Frances Marion University freshman forward Katie Roberts (Frederick, Md.) recorded her second career hat trick, including the match-winning goal in overtime, as the 11th ranked Patriots edged Presbyterian College 3-2, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
Francis Marion improved to 10-1-0 with its fifth straight win and 15th consecutive home victory. The 11-match record equals the best start in team history.
Presbyterian saw its four-match unbeaten streak end as the Blue Hose fell to 5-4-1.
Roberts gave the Patriots a quick 1-0 lead when she took a pass from Gena Fennell (Colorado Springs, CO) and lofted it over the Presbyterian goalkeeper at 8:36. She upped the advantage to 2-0 when she headed a pass over a Blue Hose defender, chased the ball down, and beat keeper Lara Johnson (Hilliard, OH) for the score at 37:14.
Presbyterian scored twice in the opening 10:54 of the second half to knot the match at 2-2. Ashley Davies (Greenville, SC) scored her fifth goal of the season when she took a pass from Jamie Harris (Greenville, SC) and drilled the ball between the outstretched arms of FMU keeper Joanna Rich (Summerville, SC) at 50:46.
Presbyterian freshman Delisa Smith (Anderson, SC) tied the match at the 55:54 mark when she scored off a Jessi Adair (Decatur, GA) corner kick.
In overtime, FMU had two opportunities to score in the 99th minute, but Fennell's shot bounced off the crossbar and Denise Hornbeck's (Richmond, VA) follow-up header was wide to the left.
Roberts notched her team-leading 10th goal of the season, and the catch winner, at 115:18 when Sabin Sapienza's (Shorenham, NY) shot was stopped by Johnson, but the ball rebounded to Roberts who knocked it into the net.
The Patriots outshot Presbyterian 18-10, and led in corner kicks 10-2. Rich tallied four saves, while Johnson recorded six saves.
The victory was the 75th career win for FMU head coach Murray Hartzler, who began the Patriot women's program only six season's ago. FMU plays at USC Aiken, Wednesday at 5 pm in a Peach Belt Conference match. Presbyterian host Longwood College, Tuesday at 4 pm.
