Blue Hose Top Wingate 2-0

Wingate, N.C. - Presbyterian College sophomore midfielder Delisa Smith scored twice to lead the Blue Hose to a 2-0 South Atlantic Conference women's soccer win over host Wingate University this afternoon at the Wingate University soccer facility.

Presbyterian is 4-3-1 overall (3-1-0 SAC), while Wingate falls to 5-4-1 overall (2-2-1 SAC). Wingate entertains non-conference foe USC Spartanburg Saturday at 2 p.m., while Presbyterian hosts Francis Marion Friday night at 7 p.m.

Smith is the top scorer on the PC team with eight goals. After a scoreless first half, Smith wasted little time putting the Blue Hose on the board in the second frame. She took a loose ball on the left side and wrapped it around Wingate junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Rogers (Raleigh, N.C.) at the 47:31 mark.

Sophomore midfielder Ashley Cooke assisted Smith's second goal. Cooke fired a right-to-left pass to Smith and she converted at the 75:23 plateau to close out the scoring.

The Bulldogs had chances, especially in the first half. Wingate outshot Presbyterian 8-6 in the opening stanza, but Blue Hose sophomore goalkeeper Aimee Tatom made three saves to keep the hosts at bay.

For the match, the Bulldogs outshot the Blue Hose 14-12.

Presbyterian senior netminder Lara Johnson played the second half, recording one save. Rogers went the distance between the pipes for Wingate. The 2000 All-SAC first team selection notched seven saves.
