Gardner-Webb University Annual Chapter 1 Relays

BOILING SPRINGS ---- Gardner-Webb University swept the top three spots on the men's side and Clemson University placed two teams in the top four in the women's competition, as both captured the Division I team titles at the 2001 Daniel Chapter One Cross Country Relays at Gardner-Webb.

Savannah College of Art & Design captured top honors in the men's and women's Division II/III competition.

In an alternative format to traditional cross country meets, squads were divided into two-person teams and were required to pass the baton midway through each race. The women's race distance was 6,000 meters and the men's race was 10,000 meters.

Gardner-Webb's duo of Michael McCauley and Greg Moliterno posted the top time on the men's side, running the 6K distance in 35:26.90. That time narrowly topped teammates Adam Gaske and Jonathan Dameron (35:44.00) and the GWU tandem of Jesse Haygood and Chip Carter (37:23.00). Savannah College of Art & Design's duo of Garrett Johnson and George Morse (37:49.00) captured fourth position, while Wofford College's Matthew Palka and Andre' Caldwell came in fifth with a time of 38:22.00.

Team points were scored head-to-head in a dual meet format. Clemson finished the women's Divison I competition with a 2-0 overall mark, beating both Gardner-Webb and Wofford. Gardner-Webb bested Wofford head-to-head on the men's side. Savannah College of Art & Design outdistanced Presbyterian in both men's and women's classifications.
