CLINTON, S.C. - In a stunning upset, Presbyterian College women's soccer team beat the #8 ranked team in the country, University of North Florida, 3-0 in their first game of the season.
The Osprey's (1-1-0) came into today's match ranked #8 in the NSCAA/NCAA Division II preseason poll and are coming off a quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA Division II National Tournament a season ago where they lost to eventual National Champion Christian Brothers University.
The first period began with both teams fighting for possession until freshman forward Elizabeth Ortstadt (Marietta, Ga.) made the first goal of the season with a rebound shot up the middle after a sharp pass by junior forward Delisa Smith (Anderson, S.C.) 38.33 into the game.
From that point on the Blue Hose did not stop on their attack and in the 60th minute senior defender Jocelyn Darrow (Savannah, Ga.) made her first goal of the season with an assist from senior midfielder Jessi Adair (Decatur, Ga.). The final exclamation point of the Blue Hose win was made with three minutes left in the game by freshman midfielder Megan Smith (Greenville, S.C.) with assists from D. Smith and sophomore defender Hannah Smith (Lilburn, Ga.).
The Blue Hose out shot the Osprey's 14-8 and dominated the corner kicks 8-1. Getting her first shutout of the year as well was P.C.'s junior goalkeeper Aimee Tatom (Irving, TX) who only had to make three saves due to the Blue Hose incredible defense. North Florida's sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Epsteen (Sherwood, Ore.) had to make six saves while allowing three goals on the day.
The Blue Hose (1-0-0) are picked second in this year's SAC Preseason Coaches Poll and will travel up to USC Spartanburg this Wednesday to play a tough Lady Rifles team with the kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
