Women's Soccer Presbyterian College Athletics

Cannon Nets Golden Goal

CLINTON, S.C. ? Presbyterian College's Lytle Cannon scored at the 93:36 mark of the match in the first overtime period and the Blue Hose defeated future Big South opponent High Point University 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Martin Soccer Stadium.

Cannon (Spartanburg, S.C.) used a ball across the middle of the six-yard box from Melanie Martin (Simpsonville, S.C.) to slide the soccer ball just past the outstretched hands of High Point (8-6-2) goalkeeper Marissa Abbot into the bottom left corner of the net.

The goal was Cannon's fifth of the year, while the assist was the second of Martin's career.

With the win, PC is now in the midst of a two-game winning streak, marking the second time in the 2007 season that they have picked up two or more wins in a row. The Blue Hose won three games in a row in the middle of September.

The Blue Hose are also now 2-3-1 against Big South opposition with both games of the current two-game winning streak coming against Big South foes in VMI and High Point.

The Panthers actually ended the game winning the overall statistical battle, claiming 11 more shot attempts than the Blue Hose at 24-13. High Point also had 10 corner kicks in the game compared to PC's two.

Playing the entire game between the pipes for PC, Erin Sinkuler (Roswell, Ga.) made 14 saves for the Blue Hose.

The Blue Hose (5-7-1), who are now 2-2-1 at home in 2007 after the High Point win, look to even their record against Big South teams and end their 2007 season with three straight wins in their final match of the year against Radford at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4.

The game will mark senior day at Martin Stadium with Coach Purcell and Assistant Coach Matt Smith honoring PC's four seniors for their dedication to Blue Hose women's soccer.
