CONWAY, S.C. - In the first ever regular season meeting between the two schools, Coastal Carolina netted a goal in the final 12 minutes of the contest to tally a 1-0 victory over the Blue Hose on Wednesday evening at CCU Soccer Field.
The loss leaves the Blue Hose 3-3 in their last six games and 3-5 overall. Coastal Carolina is now 7-4-1 on the 2007 season.
Coastal Carolina's Amanda Gelsomino scored the game-winner at the 78:39 mark of the second half when she used a pass from teammate Heather Haupt to score from five yards out and acquire the contest's only goal and earn the Chanticleers a 1-0 victory.
Overall, the Chanticleers outshot the Blue Hose 15-7, taking a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks by the conclusion the contest.
Abby Young (Charlotte, N.C.) came in for Erin Sinkuler (Roswell, Ga.) in the second half to save three Coastal Carolina shots. Tricia Bryan (Pawley's Island, S.C.) and Maggie Carruth (Roswell, Ga.) both had a team-high tying two shots in the game, including one shot each on goal.
Carruth had a chance to even the game for the Blue Hose in the final 10 seconds, but her shot was saved by Chanticleers' goalkeeper Amy Haggard.
The Blue Hose return home this Saturday for their third straight match against a Big South foe. PC will square off against Winthrop beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Martin Soccer Stadium.
The match is the first of two consecutive home games for the the Blue Hose. After tangling with the Eagles on Saturday they wil then welcome the Lady Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial to Martin Soccer Stadium for a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
