Blue Hose Softball Claims First Win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Presbyterian College softball concluded its first day of the Charlotte Green & White Tournament at the Phillips Complex with a 1-1 record.

The Blue Hose started the day by picking up a win against a future Big South opponent in its first try as an NCAA Division I softball program on Saturday with a 5-2 win on Saturday morning over Charleston Southern.

PC followed that up with a 9-0 loss to defending ACC champion Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon.

PC is now 1-3 on the year.

Down 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning against the Buccaneers, PC outscored Charleston Southern 5-1 over the final three innings to secure its first DI softball victory.

PC got things rolling in the fourth when Paige Cassady (Orlando, Fla.) doubled in two runs to give PC its first lead at 2-1.

The Blue Hose advanced their lead to 4-1 the next inning with its first two home run inning of the 2008 season. Ashley Ford (Marietta, Ga.) hit her first of the year in the inning to make it 3-1 in favor of PC and then Rachel Parker (Lake City, Fla.) smacked her second of the year to pull PC ahead 5-1 over CSU.

In the bottom of the sixth, Katie Anderson (North Augusta, S.C.) came in to pinch hit for Erin Stewart (Marion, S.C.). The move paid off for Dave Majeski's Blue Hose as Anderson singled to right field to bring in Cari Clark (Lafayette, La.), who had opened the inning by being walked.

The five runs over the last three innings would prove to be too much for CSU. The Buccaneers would claim one run back, but PC won its first of the year by the score of 5-2.

No Blue Hose finished with more than one hit against CSU on Saturday, but eight Blue Hose recorded one hit in the win.

Mary Gordon (Vernon, Conn.) struck out three batters against CSU from the circle en route to her first win of the year.

In PC's game with Virginia Tech the Hokies held the Blue Hose to just three hits. Amanda Miller (Orlando, Fla.) led PC in the shutout loss. The freshman was 2-for-3 from the plate in the game.

Rachel Parker had one hit against VT to finish with two hits on Saturday. Miller and Parker were the only Blue Hose to have multiple hits in the two games on Saturday. Miller finished with three hits in the two games, while Parker had two.

The Blue Hose continue play in the Green & White Tournament on Sunday against Charlotte at 11 a.m. PC will be looking to avenge last weekend's two losses to the 49ers.
