SPARTANBURG,
S.C. ? Presbyterian College's women's soccer team battled against Wofford into
double overtime before ultimately dropping a 2-1 decision to the Terriers in
PC's first game of the Academy Sports & Outdoors Soccer Shootout on Friday
evening in Spartanburg.
Senior
forward Lytle Cannon (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg)
put the Blue Hose on the board early in the game when she sidestepped a Wofford
defender to fire off a shot from 25 yards out. PC dominated the first half,
outshooting the Terriers 5-1 and earning the only corner kick in the 45-minute
period. The half ended with a Wofford free kick which senior midfielder Christy Howard
(Lilburn, Ga./Parkview)
blocked to retain the Blue Hose 1-0 lead.
Wofford (1-3-2)
evened the score three minutes into the second half when freshman Maggie
McLaughlin scored off a pass from Monica Ploetzke. Junior goalkeeper Abby Young
(Charlotte, N.C./Parkview) kept the Terriers from taking the lead ten minutes
later when she jumped up to block a Wofford shot that went into the
upper-quarter of the net.
The two
teams traded shots for the remainder of regulation to end the second half tied
at one. Junior Tricia Bryan
(Pawley's Island, S.C.), who led the Blue Hose with seven shots on the evening,
took the only shot by either side in the first overtime but came up short as
the Terriers' Katie McChesney made the save.
Wofford's
Nikki Siebert scored the game-winner 45 seconds into the second overtime to end
the sudden-death period. The teams ended the 100:48 contest with 14 shots
apiece.
