SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Defense was the name of the game for Presbyterian College on Sunday afternoon as the women's soccer team faced Furman in its final game of the Academy Sports & Outdoors Soccer Shootout at Wofford College. The Paladins escaped with a 1-0 victory over the Blue Hose.

Freshman Sarah Beth Anderson (Grayson, Ga./Grayson) stepped in goal for PC for the first time in her collegiate career and led the Blue Hose defense with 16 saves over the 90-minute period.

Senior Laura Davis (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) made PC's only shot in the first half. Furman peppered the Blue Hose defense with 15 shots, 10 of which were stopped by Anderson. Despite the Paladins' offensive onslaught, PC's defense held strong and the two teams entered halftime scoreless.

Furman (4-2-1) finally broke through the Blue Hose defense 25 minutes into the second half. Ashley Creavalle shot the ball from eight yards on the left side of the net to gain a one-goal advantage.

Moments later, Anderson stopped a shot that bounced back onto an opponent's foot and sophomore Stefani Thacker (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) moved over to stop a second shot.

The Blue Hose looked to make a late comeback when senior Ashley Cook (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) registered a shot, forcing Paladins' goalkeeper Jessica Smith to make her first save of the game. An ensuing corner kick kept PC's hopes alive, but the Blue Hose were unable to capitalize and the game ended with Furman earning its fourth victory of the 2008 season.

PC (1-5-0) will begin its conference schedule on Wednesday at UNC Asheville at 4 p.m.
