NORFOLK, Va. - The Presbyterian College football team continued to work
hard, holding an early lead over Old Dominion, but the team was unable to hold
it in the 34-16 loss Saturday evening in the squad's last non-conference game
of the season.
The Blue Hose now stand at 0-6 on the season while the Monarchs improve to 4-2
on the year.
"There are a lot of young men who are hurting because of the loss right now,"
head coach Harold Nichols said. "For the most part, we were able to hold Old
Dominion in check to a certain degree. We were able to move the ball well
between the 20's but we weren't able to get the ball into the end zone.
"Some of our young defensive student-athletes made good plays tonight. There is
some big upside to them. We saw some improvement today."
Quarterback Brandon Miley led the offensive attack, completing 20-of-44 passes
for 273 yards and a touchdown. Running back
Trandon Dendy guided the ground game with 27 attempts for 106
yards with a touchdown. Lance Byrd chipped in 54 yards on seven carries for a 7.7
yards per carry average.
Fullback Sean Armstrong hauled in his first career touchdown reception on an
11-yard pass from Miley. Patrick McKoy caught five passes for 91 yards with a long of 44.
On the
defensive side of the ball, Derek Brown posted a team-best seven tackles,
including one for loss. Rookie Daryl Ash stopped six Monarchs by himself, which
was a team high. Ash also had two stops in the backfield. Fellow rookie Connor
Norman also garnered two stops for loss.
PC's defense stepped up big on the Monarchs' first drive of the game, stuffing
the defense in a goal line stand. The team forced a fumble with Bryce Smiley
recovering on the six-yard line.
After an Old Dominion missed field goal, the Blue Hose marched down the field
to open the scoring with a 14-play, 54-yard drive that caused 6:01 to go off the clock. The drive
featured several big runs by Dendy, and was capped off by rookie Aaron Mayes'
31-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead.
Trailing 14-3 with just 11 seconds remaining in the first half, Miley connected
with Armstrong for the 11-yard touchdown. The touchdown capped off a perfectly
executed two-minute drill by Miley and the offense, which consisted of nine
plays covering 65 yards in just 1:25.
Old Dominion opened the scoring in the second half with a two-yard touchdown
pass from Thomas DeMarco to Matt Carrillo for a 21-10 advantage.
PC quickly countered with a two-yard touchdown run by Dendy off a drive that
took just 1:06 off the clock.
The Blue
Hose defense could not contain the Monarchs as the home team widened its
advantage to 27-16 off a four-yard touchdown run with 1:37 to go in the third quarter. PC's
special teams blocked the kick, returning it to the 15-yard line before being
tackled.
Old Dominion tacked on a late touchdown for the final margin with 2:08 to play.
For the game, PC out-gained the Monarchs 420-331. The Blue Hose passed for 273
yards to just 124 for the home team. ODU out-rushed the Blue Hose 207-147.
The biggest differential came in the turnover battle as PC accounted for four
interceptions, three of which came off tipped balls or other unusual
circumstances. ODU lost two fumbles while PC lost one of the three it fumbled.
The Blue Hose now head into their bye week as the team does not return to
action until Oct. 24 when Nichols' squad hosts VMI at 2 p.m. The contest is homecoming for PC.
