Clinton, S.C. - Presbyterian College women's soccer conceded
two goals early but answered when it counted to earn a 2-2 draw against Coastal
Carolina on Friday night. Katie Hunter
was the hero of the evening with two goals to bring the Blue Hose even with the
Chanticleers on the evening. The draw
also gives PC their first conference point of the season, moving the Blue Hose
out of tenth place and into a tie for ninth.
"I am really proud of our effort and character tonight,"
said head coach Brian Purcell. "I don't
think we played badly in the first half but we showed character in bringing the
match back even especially after the way we've played recently."
The Blue Hose (3-8-1, 0-3-1 BSC) caught a fortuitous break in
the 11th minute when an apparent Chanticleer (4-10-2, 2-2-1 BSC) goal was
disallowed by way of the offsides flag.
Eerie moments came just after the quarter of an hour mark
when a large fog bank rolled across Edens Field which made visibility difficult
at best for the majority of the game. The
fog would lift in the 80th minute.
PC's first shot came with eighteen and a half minutes
remaining before halftime when Stephanie Aaron's volley attempt from 20 yards
sailed wide. The shot ended a run of
nine straight Chanticleer shots.
In the 31st minute, Coastal went up 1-0 on a goal
from Dana Gentile. She was assisted on
her eighth goal of the season by Anna Tupy.
The second goal for the Chanticleers came in the 38th
minute when Tupy posted an unassisted effort for her third goal of the season.
Coming out of the halftime break, Presbyterian College cut
the deficit to one when Hunter notched her first goal of the season off a
corner kick from Stephanie Aaron. The
tally ended a string of four matches without a goal which ran nearly a month.
In the 71st minute, Morgan Fragapane went free on
goal and hit the shot that looked to be the equalizer but it hit the left post
and stayed out, denying Fragapane her second goal of the season.
The equalizer came in
the 79th minute when Hunter scored yet again off a rebounded shot
off the boot of Britney Horton. It was
her second goal of the night making her the first Blue Hose player since 2007
to score more than one goal in a match.
Her brace makes her one of only three players since the Division I
transition to score multiple goals in a match for PC.
The teams stayed on level terms for the remainder of
regulation with each team getting two scoring opportunities in the final ten
minutes.
With four minutes remaining in the first overtime session,
Coastal Carolina was had their second goal of the night disallowed on
offsides. The goal, had it gone in,
would have given the Chanticleers the win.
The final fifteen minutes played out with each team taking
chances but there was nothing to separate the teams. The tie is PC's first of the season while
Coastal Carolina takes the result for the second time this season.
Abby Young started the match between the pipes for PC and made
two saves while allowing both goals in the first half of play. She was replaced at the break by Sarah Beth
Anderson who made seven saves in 65 minutes of work keeping a second half and
overtime clean sheet.
Presbyterian College will return to action on Sunday
afternoon for a matinee against Charleston Southern starting at 2 p.m.
