Clinton, S.C. - Two early goals were not enough for
Presbyterian College women's soccer on Sunday afternoon against Charleston
Southern as the Blue Hose fell, 3-2 in Big South play. Kate Baker and Tricia Bryan tallied the goals
inside the first ten minutes for the Blue Hose who fall to 3-9-1 on the year
and 0-4-1 in league play. The Buccaneers
of CSU improve to 11-4-1 and 4-1-1 in the conference.
"I'm proud of the way the team has played this weekend,"
said head coach Brian Purcell. "Charleston
Southern and Coastal Carolina are two of the best teams in the league but it's disappointing
to only get a point when we played this well.
You can't be satisfied with results like today but it's reassuring to be
competitive with the best teams in the league like we have been this weekend."
Kate Baker scored PC's opening goal in the fifth minute of
play. It came on the Blue Hose's second
corner kick in rapid succession. The
corner was played into the six yard box too Baker by Stephanie Aaron who was
credited with the assist. The goal is PC's
second earliest goal of the season.
Tricia Bryan doubled the Blue Hose advantage five minutes
later on another set piece play. Aaron
played the corner to the near post again at the edge of the six yard box and on
the head of Bryan. She thundered the
ball into the net with authority to put PC up 2-0.
In the 34th minute, the Bucs were denied by the
crossbar. CSU's Olivia Urig clanged a
shot from 30 yards off the woodwork in what would have been the Bucs first goal
of the match.
The Buccaneers did score two minute later on a goal from Boyce. She got the ball at ten yards off a rebound
off the crossbar from a shot by Casey Bolduc.
Boyce buried the ball in the net for her tenth goal of the season.
Charleston Southern equalized in the final minute of the
first half when Boyce notched her second goal of the match and 11th
of the season off a dual assist from Morgann Wood and Staci Ulichnie.
Boyce earned a hat trick in the 47th minute when
she got free in the penalty area again.
She struck the ball from the penalty spot and scored her 12th
goal of the season. She was assisted by Bolduc
and Jen Vroman.
The Blue Hose tallied only two shots over the final 45
minutes as the Charleston Southern defense toughened up. Overall, PC was outshot 17-10 in the match.
The Presbyterian College goalkeepers had five total saves in
the match. Abby Young started the match
and went the first half making one save and allowing two goals. She was replaced at the break by Sarah Beth
Anderson who went the final forty-five minutes making four saves and allowing a
goal.
PC will return to action on Friday evening with a road trip
to Gardner-Webb. The final road match of
the season will take place on Sunday, Oct. 25 at Winthrop starting at 2 p.m.
