Clinton, S.C. - It took 11 matches, but Presbyterian College
is no longer winless in the Big South Conference. The Blue Hose scored a 49th minute
goal to claim the win against Radford on Saturday afternoon at Martin
Stadium. The win improves the PC to 2-7
on the year and 1-2 in the Big South.
Radford falls to 2-4-1 and 0-2-1 in the league.
"This is a monumental win for this program after not winning
a Big South game last year," said head coach Bret Boulware. "We fought hard for this win. Our guys have played really well for them to
get the results that they have had so far this year. "
With just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half, PC
initiated a counterattack that tested the Highlander rearguard. Juan Ocampo initiated the run by brining the
ball out of defense across the midline and fed a through ball to Paul
Gunning. The freshman striker crossed
the ball across the face of goal out of the reach of three attackers crashing
the six yard box.
The first half finished level at 0-0 with Radford earning
seven shots in the first forty-five minutes to PC's zero.
Sam Eastridge put the Blue Hose on top 1-0 thanks to
unrelenting pressure in the 49th minute. The Blue Hose earned four consecutive corners
and finally cashed in off the corner play in from Lewis Makin. Eastridge's goal is his second of the season
and also the second in as many games.
The pressure to open the period earned the Blue Hose seven
shots to open the second half to equal Radford's total in only the first ten
minutes.
"In the end, our finishing was there and that's what we've
been working on," added Boulware. "I
think it's big for us to get our first conference win against a very good
program like Radford."
The remainder of the match was left to the PC defense who successfully
kept the first clean sheet of the season.
Radford managed two shots over the final 35 minutes but held much of the
possession over the final five minutes.
PC goalkeeper Andrew Wallingford went the distance and made
two saves in the match. Radford's Ryan
Taylor suffered the defeat by allowing the goal while making five saves.
Presbyterian College led Radford in shots, 10-9 but trailed
in corner kicks by a 7-5 margin. Radford
was flagged offside eight times while the Blue Hose were only caught out once.
The beat goes on for PC on Tuesday afternoon with a 4 p.m.
match at UNC Asheville. The match opens
a three match road swing, the longest of the season for the Blue Hose.
