CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian
College women's basketball broke into the win column on Monday afternoon with a
61-47 win over South Carolina State at the Templeton Center. The Blue Hose improve to 1-9 on the season
while the Bulldogs fall to an even 4-4 this year. The 14-point win also ends a 14-game skid
which dates back to the 2008-09 season.
Freshman Mariah Pietrowski scored the second highest total
of her career with 21 points to lead all scorers. She shot 9-of-13 from the field to tie her
career high in field goals made and set a new high in attempts. The Elizabethton, Tenn. native added five
rebounds and a steal.
The first half was a tightly contested affair with the teams
staying close throughout the period. The
Blue Hose were able to gain a seven point advantage at the 11:03 mark but saw
it erased less than two minutes later.
Junior Amanda Mills posted six of her 14 points in the first period to
help the Blue Hose to a 20-19 lead at the break.
Coming out of the break, PC went on a 9-0 run to go up 29-19
just before the first media timeout. A
string of three consecutive three pointers took PC 12 in front at the 9:35
mark. Mills drained two while freshman
Devin Fothergill got in on the action with a basket from downtown. Fothergill had 12 points in the game.
South Carolina State fought back late, cutting the advantage
for PC to just six points with just a minute remaining to end SCSU's two game
winning streak. The Bulldogs with wins
over Winston-Salem State, North Carolina Central, Furman and Savannah State saw
their lowest scoring output of the season as leading scorer Sophilla Hipps
scored just 14 points, four below her season average. No other Bulldog reached double-figures.
Freshman Dria David grabbed seven rebounds to go along with
her six points. Overall, the rebounding
story was told on the offensive glass as PC out-rebounded the Bulldogs 12-1 on
the offensive side and 34-27 overall.
The Blue Hose logged a season low 18 turnovers while
shooting 42.6% from the field and 23.1% from beyond the arc. The charity stripe was unkind to the Blue
Hose who only shot 12-of-24 from the line.
The Blue Hose now open a run of three-straight road games
which will take PC into 2010. The road
swing opens on Monday, Dec. 21 as PC visits Alabama at 11:30 a.m.
