Blue Hose Loses Big South Opener to No. 64 Winthrop

CLINTON, S.C. ? Presbyterian College women's tennis suffered a 7-0 setback to the No. 64 Winthrop Eagles in Clinton on Wednesday afternoon in the team's first Big South Conference match of the season.

 

Freshman Paige Oelke (Athens, Ga./Cedar Shoals H.S.) was the only member of the Blue Hose to win games in both sets in singles competition. She fought against Lisa Wilkinson in the four spot before ultimately succumbing 6-1, 6-3. Fellow rookie Daryl Thompson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Lord Byng Secondary) is the only other PC player to register a point against Winthrop in singles as a sixth seed (6-0, 6-1).

 

In doubles, Oelke paired up with Heather Isbell (Clinton, S.C./Clinton H.S.) to face top-seeded Patricia Coimbra and Elizaveta Zaytseva. The pair won two games against the Eagles top duo before dropping 8-2. No. 3 Cara Caruso (Roswell, Ga./Pope H.S.) and Thompson also lost to the Winthrop pair of Paula Pereira and Sara Abutovic 8-2.

 

The Blue Hose pack their bags for Hawaii where the team will four matches over the next week against Chaminade, Brigham Young Hawaii, Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific.

2.     Herrera/Wilkinson (WIN) def. Diminich/Thompson (PC) 8-1
