SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College women's
tennis dropped a hard fought match at Wofford Thursday afternoon by a 5-2
score.
The Blue Hose fall to 2-9 on the year while the Terriers improve to 1-6 on the
season.
The two squads battled to a tie in the doubles portion of the match after the
No. 2 and No. 3 teams played. At the No. 3 slot, Cara Caruso and Paige Oelke
knocked off Sonia Anand and Kristin Demosthenes by an 8-6 score.
The No. 2 squad of Daryl Thompson and Virginia Waldron dropped an 8-3 match to
Haley Baird and Sabrina Smyers. Then, the drama unfolded as the Blue Hose were
able to pull off a 9-7 win at the top spot. With the scored tied at 7-7, PC
broke serve to take an 8-7 advantage. The duo of Megan Davis and Abby Diminich
were able to hold serve while taking a 1-0 lead into singles play, knocking off
Caley Wetzig and Ashley Lawrence.
In the singles line-up, Lawrence evened the score by knocking off Davis 6-1, 6-3. Wetzig then won a
straight sets match over Diminich. Diminich dropped the contest at the top spot
by scores of 6-4, 6-1.
Baird won
the fourth spot by a 6-3, 6-1 score over Oelke. Fifth-seeded Thompson dropped a
two-set heartbreaker by a 6-3, 7-6(4) score.
Head coach Tyler Davis' team, who was without usual No. 2 seed Heather Isbell,
picked up another point as Waldron defeated Betsy Waldron 6-2, 6-4. However, it
was not enough for the victory.
The Blue Hose return to action on March 21 at Radford at 1 p.m. PC was supposed
to play Liberty this weekend, but due to the impending bad weather, the
match has been postponed. A make-up date has not yet been slated.
